Looking for a low prifile silent gearbox
I'm looking for a low profile preferably silent gearbox that can fit into a panther but not abstruct the areas behind the drivers vision port and mg port of a Panther Ausf D, does anyone know of one?

Re: Looking for a low prifile silent gearbox
Taigen make some very nice low profile gearboxes all of which run in well fitted bushes,
I relocate the power switch and the volume control above the gearboxes allowing the switches to be worked through the driver and radio ops hatches in my Panzer 4s so my need for low profile gearboxes is much like yours and these gearboxes are most suitable although I do have a pair of the latest Heng Long gearboxes and they are also low profile and they are a very good value and smooth running set.

I think I am about to upset someone

Re: Looking for a low prifile silent gearbox
I currently have the stock taigen gearboxes but they are quite loud and too big to fit the drivers vision port mechanism, I will probably re-use them in my Luchs conversion
How loud are those 5:1 gearboxes?

Re: Looking for a low prifile silent gearbox
Silent is accomplished by using a gearbox with plastic gears on the high end (up by the motor). The all metal ones just howl.
Tamiya Tiger 1's originally came with plastic ones (white plastic gears), but they are pretty fragile, and can strip out easily.
One might also investigate the plastic HL gearboxes as well. I'd suggest a motor upgrade on the HL transmission.
Oddly, my Hooben T-55 and Elefant came with pretty low profile transmissions. Quiet too.

The quietest gearboxes I have are the big right angle drive ones from ETO ARMOUR.
