Challenger 2 engine colour

Post by Black Knight »

Ok, weird question alert! Can anyone tell me the colour used to paint Challenger 2 (and other British AFV) engines please?

All the A class vehicle engines I saw while serving were Duck Egg Blue.

Cheers. I was guessing Coral Blue - I forgot about Duck Egg!

One of the things I like about the B40/B60 and B80 engines apart from most parts being interchangeable is that the series was first manufactured by Rolls Royce in 1947 and was fitted across the whole gamut of British Military vehicles as well as generators but because they had hardened valve seats to allow them to run on low grade gasoline it means that if you have an ex-service Champ it will run just fine on unleaded with no modifications needed

Any idea why that particular colour?

True! I remember as a kid I used it on the underside of a 1:72 scale WWII aircraft (got a feeling it was an Airfix Mosquito or a 1:32 scale Me262) and loved it!

I have no idea although military contracts usually include such details,
It might be a colour favoured by the Engine Division of Rolls Royce Motors but that is all guesswork.

Land Rover engines that are ex-military are that colour too: I've got one (engine) from mid-late 70's that's still mostly painted.

The duck egg blue paint used is a heat resistant paint, something like 160* going back to my days doing RR Eagle 3 engines.
Think about the heat generated in the tank pack bay.
If a pack component like an alternator fails due to overheating, you will notice a colour change. A seized alternator on some pack assemblies will prevent the engine starting.
