HL Truck Mods

Heng Long/WPL are now manufacturing 1/16 scale RC trucks, so it seemed sensible to create a forum area dedicated to the amazing things that members are doing with them. Post your builds, mods, and tips here.

Ok here is a suggestion for your axle, take a WPL front axle, cut off the steering bits, take of the dog bone ends and fit hex wheel ends, and behold you have a narrower axle. if it's not narrow enough then trim a bit off the wider end and try again until it fits? :D

It's what I did for Herman's PZ42 build.

Honestly I'd just print the entire front axle assembly, much simpler than messing around with the WPL bits. The real trick would be getting enough ballest over the front and rear axles so that it gripped and turned.

M35 Rat Rod is finally being bein finished. My 1st full RC successful build, but it has taken a while to perfect the pla printed parts.

All b36 command vehicle in paint currently

Zil 131, which I will be using in an 8x8 unique Russian truck build.

Man KAT1 8x8 Dakar truck

I have also bought, and this is a sign of madness a
Subotech Mutt M151, Wpl c24, Jjrc q65 jeep, Soviet ural, Soviet ural.command vehicle, oil tank, wpl b24 GAZ 66, jjrc q64 man kat and a few others I bought! My wife is loving painting these, so I am building and designing parts, she is painting and detailing.
We also bought a Abrams tank project and other vehicles.
We lost the plot haha
Jeebus, Will, you rob a bank or somethin'? @)

I'd really like to know more about the tanker, Bud. I'm thinking of getting one so your opinion of them will help. I'll definitely be getting a jeep eventually, there's a cool guy at RCU, Airbrushler, who's doing one now and it's very cool. Sourcing a driver for that one might be a challenge, though. And I can't wait to see what you do with the mutt.

This is a 1/24 Losi crawler axle, 64mm from inside rim to inside rim, perhaps an extension could be added to the 3D printed rimes to get the right width? This is the truck I bought as a donor for my tamiya 16th schwimmwagen, if I ever get to it.

I would just add a small word of warning about using components from these cheap models, often the quality of the mechanical/electrical components sucks. I did successfully use a cheap toy on this build
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=14010
BUT it was designed as a toy for rougher work. I also canibalised a toy for this:
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=14190
with some success, that toy even had a differential built into the back axle so some can be quite good.

Bin the electircs for sure, and the steering mechanism too. I was thinking of just keeping the back axle and the front wheels, and use the front wishbones as reference for the chassis CAD work.

Recognise the gearbox assembly in that Range Rover - I have 2 of them from Mini's that I broke up for use in an M8 Greyhound Frankie did for me years ago (still haven't done anything with that either! I also tore down a 1/24 Mini from the same company to use in a Ford GPA - another project I need to finish :/ )

That Mini is so cool I'd have to get two so I could keep one to play with. 8)

I've had some luck with Temper crawlers, but it's best if you just take the axles and use different electronics. The dual motor set-up might work well with the losi axles, but so far it's proved to be a bit slow.

you'll need to bin the electronics and the steering motor, they are possibly even worse than the stock WPL ones 8O

You can get these, although they're more 7th scale and they are reasonably cheap. If you wanted a bit of fun with heng long truck running gear.
