Scratch build Tiger 2 Part 2
Scratch build Tiger 2 Part 2
Part 2 is all about the turret and its making.
Before I started i realized the turret could reach a weight of around four kilos.
Attaching the turret to the upper deck could be a bit of a problem.
My first idea was to have the turret rolling on dozens of steel balls, but it turned out to be more trouble then I wanted.
I experimented with teflon washers and found it had wonderfully smooth gliding properties.
All I had to sandwich two teflon washers between the turret floor plate and the upper deck.
The only thing I had to make a new special turret ring gear.
I went ahead made washers from 0.5mm teflon sheet and the gear from 12mm aluminium plate.
Assembling the lot I was very satisfied with the outcome, it turned very smoothly and without almost no play.
Starting the gun I liked the idea that I could fire real 22 caliber shells of coarse with the tops removed.
To do so everything needed to strong enough to take the strain.
I made it strong enough but dropped the idea real cartridges .
Here in Australia that would be considered a weapon and red tape makes a project like that just impossible.
To elevate and recoil the gun I bought two KST DS215MG servos.
The nylon gears and horns they came with where not strong enough.
Surging the internet I could not find anything in metal for KST servos. They have their own standard and nothing fits from anywhere.
Even the center screw has an odd size 2.3mm. Not to mention the odd sized spline.
Had to make all those part from brass.
The commanders cupola I made from aluminium. I could have used a bought one they are very good in detail but just wanted to make my own.
Here is the report in pictures.
