An interesting commission - KV220

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

An interesting commission - KV220

Post by AlwynTurner »

Whilst visiting my friend and fellow LAD member George Barnes, he showed me an article in a magazine about a prototype KV220 tank that was built in 1941 and saw limited service, and George mentioned he would quite like to have one. As it happens I have various spare bits scattered around my man cave including a couple of KV1 lower hulls and a KV1 upper hull, so we discussed the prospect of a collaboration to build the beast.

Here it is

and the blueprint

This beastie had an extra set of roadwheels from the basic KV1 and was a metre longer. It was fitted with the 85mm gun that was later used on the KV85. The tank had a limited career and was knocked out in 1941 after a direct hit from a 150mm shell on the front glacis. The tank was recovered and the turret used as a static defense gun in the battle of Stalingrad, the hull was given a KV1 turret with a 76mm gun and also was used at Stalingrad.

This will be an interesting project for me and my trusty Dremell in my 'spare' time :haha: :haha: :haha:

Very nice idea. I like the KV3 from wot with the rounder cast turret and 107mm.

Look forward to this!

And so it begins
Stripped the first chassis of the removable parts

and then got busy with the dremmell and razor saw

Whittling with a dremmell on a plastic chassis is fun but not or the faint hearted! :haha:

Now the tricky part of working out where to cut to extend the chassis. This is great fun because the two sides are not symetrical because of the simulated torsion bar suspension......
