Oz, maybe they used Canadian matches... best in the world, probably.

Read a book called Under The Wire by Bill Ash. Its a good read about his time as an American fighter pilot in WW2 and his many POW escapes. Getting to the point, he wanted to join the RAF before America had declared war on Germany but he couldnt just volunteer as the law at that time still made it illegal for an American citizen to fight for the British armed forces, a throw back to the war of independance... he wouldve effectively be fighting for the enemy!

To get around this he went to Canada, join the RCAF and then transfered across the pond the blighty.

Did you also know that in the event of a world apocalypse, Canada is the safest country to be in?
Why?
The rest of the industrialised world has nuclear power, and if there is a mass extinction of humans all of those nuclear plants will go into meltdown when the cooling isn't maintained, contaminating thousands of square miles in all directions.
Canada has hydro power.
(My sis and her husband live outside of Toronto, my father learnt to fly in Canada during the war, and I even went there myself...once! lol).

I thought it was Australia that was the safest place in the world, because the Cannucks have the yanks next door with their nuclear power, just remember Three mile island incident in 1979, every one across north America was sh*tting them selves

I find a lot of things that are posted on the forums interesting------But the problem is a lot of it seems to over-look
one small thing----"the actual facts"

There are somewhere around 31 countrys who have and use nuclear power plants-----Ontario Canada if I read
"Wikipedia==Nuclear Power" right has 16 "nuclear" operating power plants.  ??? ???

Here in Washington state in the USA we also have a lot of hydro-dams,but we also have Nuclear power plants setting in our back yards---"so to speak".

you forgot to mention than Canadian troops knocked out and captured far more Tigers in Normandy than the Americans did in the whole of WWII

Unfortunately, we are also the country with the ineffective medical system (just last week, a man died in a hospital after beign in the waiting room for 32 hours without being looked at once) which we pay for with our 30% income taxes along with an ineffective bilingual system being forced upon us (except in Quebec where you have to be French or else!), a Metric system which was forced on us and is still not fully accepted, multiculturalism which has taken a country which used to be as patriotic as the US but now is fractured into a bunch of hyphenated Canadians (ie German-Canadians, Ukranian-Canadians, etc) and 55% of our fuel cost goingto "road tax", but (at least here in Manitoba) only less than 10% of that tax collected coming back for provincial and municipal road repairs/improvements. Oh, and if you actually want to buy something, you pay both a Federal and a Provincial tax- for Manitoba it is 12%. Add into that the fact that when Ontario, Quebec and BC vote, the rest of Canada can just stay home because our opinions mean squat. Furthermore, no other country in the world has allowed a province (or state or whatever else) to have a vote to separate from the country, but not give the rest of the country the chance to kick that province's a** out! We are the country who had our Prime Minister run off to the US during his term to escape procecution, then slap a 12 Million dollar lawsuit on the RCMP for investigating him (Brion the traitor to Canada Mulroney- look it up!). Furthermore, we have politicians who roll over every time the US wants something (no offence to the Americans- your politicians are trying to get the best for you) and we have the softest "slap on the wrist" legal system known (especially if you are a minor!). We also have crazed maniacs who stab, behead and eat people on the bus (just outsode of my lovely hometown, Winnipeg). There is one offence which we actually have the death sentence for one offence- TREASON....which is complaining about our "lovely" government. And yet, the second most powerful man in our country - the leader of the opposition, is the head of the political faction which wants to split Canada in half by allowing Quebec to separate from the rest of Canada. Did I mention that the province with the largest tax drain in our country is Quebec-far more than its demographics should allow for, and as such some of us say good riddance?

However, Canada also has the cleanest air, freshest water, best hunting, fishing and camping you will ever see. 90% of the population is within 500 miles of the southern border, and 75% is within 100 miles. We have great full bodied beer to drink, natural grain and livestock without growth hormones and such to mutate them, and we are the second largest country in the world. Our mitary forces are loved around the world and are known to be among the best trained and most diplomatic (although the worst armed), usually being called in for Peace Keeping rather than armed conflict. And face it- Canadians are just really friendly! Eh?

I'm not against my country- believe me! I am a veteran, which means I believe in this country enough to lay down my life for it. But like all other countries, it has its dark side and its ugly little secrets. Personally, I think we would be in great shape if we just streamlined our political system and get rid of the bilingualism- the English kicked the French's arses and won the war...get over it and speak English! That would get rid of about 1/3 of the taxation. I'm all for remembering one's heritage, but we came to this country to escape teh crappy conditions (real or imagined) of our homelands- why try and force my baggage on the rest of the country? And that goes double for all the new immigrants- I'm tired of being made to feel like I don't belong in my own country! Speak English if you are in public. It's good practice, and it is called being polite!

Ok, my rant is over. It really IS a great country!
