Rock Crawler
After looking around for something to build I have ordered an FTX rock crawler. I wanted something that I can do a unique bodyshell for, and after a quick bit of playing on Openscad, I knocked this up. It's 1/10 scale, so huge, but I reckon a Mars explorer suits the chassis etc.

Re: Rock Crawler
Wouldn't that be awesome. Just need a 1:10 scale Major Matt Mason (without the broken wire armatures) or similar.

Those are neat figures and I would love to have an interior with those in. Unfortunately, the interior is going to be full of chassis parts, battery and esc etc. I will wait and see how it all fits.

Re: Rock Crawler
The crawler is on my bench, but the white filament that I ordered to print a new shell hasn't arrived yet, so I set about adding a bit of detail to the original bodyshell.
The interior, drivers and rear deck are all a one piece injection moulded sheet. which look a bit 'blobby'. I decided to cut the engine out, paint the the drivers jackets, and re-do the engine and deck.
Then it was just print it, paint it, and attach it all. Looks a bit better now.

Re: Rock Crawler
A reel of white filament landed on my doorstep so yesterday I started printing the Mars Rover bodyshell. Jeez...36 hours have elapsed, its printing at 140% speed, and it still isn't finished. It's going to use up the entire 1kg reel, so I have had to order another reel to print the rear bed. The CR10 has operated flawlessly, and Cura 3 is producing an excellent finish. I will have stacks of support filament to pull off, but the latest Cura now prints it so perfectly that it brushes off without leaving a trace of where it was attached to the structure.

Re: Rock Crawler
Well that was a marathon, around 42 hours even with increasing the speed by 50%. It almost all went badly wrong, filament comes on 1kg reels, Cura told me it was an 850 gram print. So, I loaded a new reel on when I started this print, so that I had plenty of spare filament on the reel. I get to 11pm last night, the print is 90% done....but looking at the reel there was very little filament left on it? I had to stay up till 2am to make sure that it didn't run out before it finished, it was close, maybe around 1 metre left on the reel.
This means that either Cura isn't calculating filament use very accurately, or that the 1kg reels I am buying only hold around 850 grams of filament. I ordered another reel, and will deduct the weight of my empty reel from the weight of the full one...if the answer isn't 1kg then the company selling it will get a shirty message from me.
Anyway....this is the front cab and wheel inserts, and all in flawless quality.

Re: Rock Crawler
Ha ha, I never realised she was there, I did her as a test print when I got the printer as it very demanding to print something like that, she turned out amazingly well which is a testament to the CR10. May I congratulate you on your fine eye for detail! She may end up in the forces entertainment centre in a scenery diorama....

Re: Rock Crawler
For those that have 3D printers and look for cheap filament off Ebay, beware of this outfit.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3D-Printer-Fi ... 580902628?
They are advertising standard 1kg reels of filament but there is only 800grams on the reel, the plastic reel and packaging weigh 200 grams. That's a 20% shortfall, so not only not the bargain that it looks, it can spell disaster if you are going to print something that requires 850 grams, load in a new reel and leave it running a oouple of days. The filament will run out and the 40-50 hour print will be wrecked.
I wish I had read their negative feedback before ordering...jeeeez....and Ebay allows them to continue operating?
