Building our own RC Playground

Post by Will01Capri »

Hi Guys
So our kids are getting more and more interested in Mummy & Daddies models and my wife is trying to get them more involved with the garden.
We have started to make a fairy garden for the kids(they are 1.5 & 3) and with a little bit of a twist as my son loves dinosaurs, so it is a fairy and dinosaur garden. We are building several different areas around our front & rear garden.

We were also building a rockery, but to make this a little more fun, this will be built into a valley mountainous battlefield area with water feature acting like a stream and waterfall.
The reason for a valley is simple, it means i can build a bridge across the valley. In fact the bridge is already built and will now start to take shape. It is a truss type bridge and it will have a guard hut and security gate. We are also going to have small wooden lamp posts with LED lighting to act as nigh time lighting.
We also have a new gate taking shape for the fairy & dinosaur garden in the shape of the Jurassic park style gate.

It appears that the wains are in for an idyllic childhood, and the parents.... well, a partial repatriation to childhood! What could be better :D ? I like the admixture of Fairies and Dinosaurs. You could maybe make a few hybrid Leprechaunosaurs,
Dwarfosaurs and Dryadosaurs (I was going to add Nymp**saurs too- but that could be open to misinterpretation :haha: ).
I've just built a ramp and decking arrangement, to permit Tanks (as well as Humans) access to my front door. I also planted a lot of Fir, Rowan, and Willow trees 17 years ago, and now they're turning into a potential Ardennes for tank (or Fairy :lolno: ) action. I also have outdoor lights in some of them. The trees also provide a buffer between me and the occasional severe West Highland gales. :O
I like your bridge  I've often thought of building one across the wee burn that runs through my Garden; but my grandchildren don't visit often enough to justify that. Not yet anyway...
Greetings to the Dounhamers!

Thanks Guys :)
Bit more today with help from the wife & kids

Mick i know exactly what you mean, i think we are just going to try it and see after we have given the chipboard stuff alot of sealing and painting. We completely coated in PVA and let dry and have painted with shed and fence paint. But i think we will give a few more coats. If it doesn't work we will remake in marine ply or similar.
As for the bridge i have added pine wooden lampost and also a balance barrier, which i will balance washers on the end and fit a small magnet to hold it open.
I have a few more lamposts to make and then i just need alot of soil and rocks to build up our rockery so we can put in place.

Concrete air block also coming from local hardware store and will be turned into a concrete gun inplacement.
Need a small water feature pump and will make a rock waterfall and stream which will run under the bridge, but no pool of water as the kids are still very small. It may be we just make it with acrylic and make it look real even if it doesn't work.

I have also this very morning cut out the wood i need for a German guard hut, like this shown below

Should probably get on and get my cars fixed up for MOT and ready for holiday, then get on with getting the tanks operational to play in the playground.
we also have some RC vehicles which it would be fun to use the playground on aswell

Black and decker band saw was a Cheapy, think 15 quid 2nd hand and it is great. The blade does move a bit when you are doing curves so you have to be careful. But it does the job.

As for pva. Yeah we realised that after haha. I thought it was good practice to seal wood with it! But we have painted a few coats of shed paint on top. So I am hoping that will keep water away from glue and the wood!

German Guard hur made glued and pinned. Then stuck sand to outside ready for paint.

Glued the sand on it as I used ply and once dry it will be sanded and scored to try and give it some sort of rough wood effect. Then it will be painted. Should help it look slightly weathered.
I am going to make another out of wooden mixing sticks so it will be planked. But I wanted to see proportions looked ok.
Basically I looked at pictures and decided the top of the arch should be 6.5 feet and then I scaled to 1/16 scale. The other dimensions approximated. Proof of pudding would be to get a scale soldier I suppose.

Went into poundland today and bought a few dinosaurs for the Dino & fairy garden.
But also picked up epoxy glue and some wooden mixing sticks (actually meant for naming pot plants) so I will make another wooden hut using these for a more realistic hut.
I think I also want to build a guards tower with spot light.
Gonna use up turned tealight Alu pots for lamp shades.

Gonna have to stick with grumpy dinosaurs and fairy fairies.
Gnomes look like such a bad influence on.my.kids! Just have to stick with re runs of the A-Team as a far better influence :)

I did look at some tea lights but will have to go and have a better look again.

Haha. Lol

As for next guard hut. Turns out they are just the right length and no more! You need 40 I reckon to make a hut. Gonna start tonight
