New RC tank guy

Post by Will01Capri »

Hi Guys.
I have been into RC since being very young and have really had a break from the hobby for 8 to 10 years.
But now getting into the fold stronger than ever.
I have never had a tank but have always said one day.
Now is the day and I have 3 project tanks already!
Take it easy

Most recently I was in Germany on business and one of my German colleagues gave me a 1/24 Leopard which was broken due to drive but otherwise looked good.
Found the internal board burnt out aswell as motors.
This was quickly replaced with fresh and upgraded and continues to be tweaked.
This has now opened the door for more and I recently acquired 2 Henglong Tigers needing some work.

I am also an RC plane enthusiast and have also got into boats of all designs and other RC vehicles.
It's great to be here part of the tank community at last.
Some mad projects to be shared soon.

Haha. My wallet always feels empty lol!

Yes I realise photobucket is a no go as I have been caught out on another forum. Funnily enough as I am building a Capri for race use!

My tank addiction has not yet cost very much, but time will show that may not last.

Cool, what scale is your Capri? (Unless you're talking about a real one? :{ )
I'm into slot cars, and I have quite a few Capri's and MK 1 escorts :D

Mick.
The scale of my Capri is 1:1 haha.

I should explain i work as an Engineer. but this is more hands off engineering as we design products for the market.
This frustration means i need hobbies at home to keep my hands amused.
So i restore, modify & engineer my own daily, fun & race cars. When time permits of course. All of our cars are fettled to some degree as nothing is perfect. I have 5 cars myself at home & a further fleet of cars elsewhere!

In the evenings and down time from the garage i try to keep myself amused, with models rather than wasting an hour or 2 watching rubbish on the TV.

All other time i try to commit to my young family. I have 2 very young children who are already showing signs of interests in the various RC models. I wish a day was 30hrs rather than 24 haha
This is why i have modified an RC 1/24 tank to have multiple controllers so the kids can play with the turret whilst Daddy drives the tank.

I am worried however that my RC model addiction is going to involve a large house extension for just the models haha

You say slot cars, so you mean scalectrix & scx and other various makes etc(sorry if that outdated)
I too have quite a collection somewhere which i intend getting out once the kids are a bit older. I was recently clearing a family house attic and came across an old slot car set from the 1960's which we are going to try and restore back to it's former glory. I think it was a Playtone or something with old vinitage BRM's i think. Big boys toy though!
When i was at school i made my own vacuum formed slot car shells and ran these with my own homemade aluminium chassis and lower voltage rated motors so they absolutely screamed on the track running scalectrix pickups and axles :)

Aye, Welcome Will. I can imagine you tearing around the Borders (or is it Dumfriesshire ?), having a 'Bodie and Doyle' moment in your Capri. :D I had a ride in one decades ago, when they were all the rage -along with platform soles and bellbottom trousers.. :D , and when it rained it leaked like a sieve.(Poorly fitted windscreen and door seals) You could keep carp in the footwell :haha:

Been a while since i have done a Bodie & Doyle haha, did try that at one 70's party at new years, but the old thing bloody broke down so i turned up without car!
My old white Capri may have been spotted broadside in the Dumfries area i am sure for reasons which may have been out of my control.
This new one i am building is more of a racer however which will be sporting a hot V8 ;)
All of the suspension is custom built and there are no rubber bushes anywhere to be found and everything is pretty adjustable. No interior and rollcage occupying rear seat area, it is going to be for track abuse and very little road running. I have other cars for that.

I always quite liked the word Crapi, because honestly they are pretty awlful cars in standard trim but i just love them and their character. Labour of love now.

Back to the tanks i just started to start some threads of the builds i am working on. 3 project tanks in the making and more to follow. This tank bug has bitten hard!

Mk1 Mexico!!! Very nice, worth a few bob these days now.
I was lucky to get into Capri's when they were still cheap, anything old & Ford is going for silly money.
Thankfully this Capri will handle as it is being built for the circuit :)
Unfortunately i wasn't around in the 70's to watch that cool racing.

Many Tank projects in my head now
Concentrate finishing my camo Leopard, Early Tiger for my wife & Late model Tiger upgraded for me.
Would like to do a Berge Tiger & also a Morser Karl Gerat
I am sure i will come up with more, but it really depends what parts come up first
