Are you saying that this is the arrangement that worked for you? Separating the various functions so that they're matched with specific JSTs, can also be achieved with standard 8-pin connectors and a mini PCB.
Clark also recommends wiring the airsoft function so that elevation feature is independent of it :
".. HL Gun Elevation and AirSoft Correction
In HL original design, gun Elevation and AirSoft sharing same driving H/W, so the gun elevation can only be controlled in one direction, if you missed the angle you want, you will need to wait a full cycle of gun elevation, to correct this problem, we add dedicate AirSoft control h/w to TK20 board. the following shows you how to correct HL tank and get two direction elevation."
Having various units like the HL elevation unit, Lights +MG, the Airsoft gun etc terminating in JSTs, instead of being soldered to a mini board is quite handy. It makes replacement and testing much easier. The new HL 8- (9) pin board offers that capability, it seems.
Just bought an elevation unit (HL type) for my Cromwell -though I'll now be using a servo- and it terminates in a JST...

Yes, and that was the point of the Clark modification. You don't have to be using a Clark setup to benefit from the modification to standard Heng Long wiring, that stops the irritating loop effect, with the Cannon, we've all become accustomed to.
The new 9-pin connector is part of Heng Long's attempt to update its systems, and iron out well-known bugbears- like the 'loop' effect in gun elevation. Glad you're happy with the revisions
