Re: 3D printed submarine
Very nice work Mr Wibbly the full r/c version sounds very interesting You may need an industrial scale 3D printer with all of your design work
Tanks alot....
Re: 3D printed submarine
Ooh looks like an oscar II (same class as the kursk) hopefully yours is more successful!

Re: 3D printed submarine
It's this one, if that helps, though this is an early version of his design.
I'm having a problem printing the motor>gears driveshaft, I'll try it on the other printer when I get the chance.

Re: 3D printed submarine
Printed most of the parts, but have come across a design hiccup with the propulsion for RC. I can resolve it by designing a workaround. Dive planes and rudder are all temporarily in place.

Re: 3D printed submarine
Coming together nicely. I did notice that that not once in the video was the submarine under power. One thought - should the propellors counter rotate? It would prevent any torque steering.

Re: 3D printed submarine
If you take a close look at the video you can see that he is doing a ballast test, the sections of the hull are taped together so that he can take them apart. I just need some 3mm rods to make new shafts. You are correct about the counter rotation, one way around it is to print one propeller as a mirror image, so that it works in the opposite direction. There isn't a lot of space in there for dual motors or gearboxes.

Re: 3D printed submarine
Might be a silly question, but won't having both shafts turning in the same direction with a mirrored prop try and spin the vessel about the props? I can see a mirrored prop and counter rotating motors working.
Re: 3D printed submarine
Love it Rob, have always admired the mystery of RC subs, have often contemplated getting one.
Looking forward to seeing this in the flesh

I wouldn't doubt that for a second, it was just a wild thought. I may have to look at two small motors as a solution?RobW wrote:Might be a silly question, but won't having both shafts turning in the same direction with a mirrored prop try and spin the vessel about the props? Re: 3D printed submarine
If you use a single motor with a toothed gear fixed to it and use this to drive two shafts fitted with the same gear you will have counter rotating props. If one prop is the mirror of the other, then both props will provide forward motion.
