The planes had big control surfaces so they reacted very fast. Watching them I used to wonder how they managed to do the battle while running full speed and not crash or get crashed into.
Some guys that I would challenge on Remote...would just run away lol....no fun after awhile...like control line better ;)
Did see at another location the same thing you talk about with the tethered controls. Only two guys at a time battled in kind of an elimination tournament until they had a winner. Saw some crashes there mostly when they crossed up each others control lines and both planes went down, but actually much fewer then I expected.
Control line is a thing of the past ...kind of sad...but the kits are getting harder to get...and the planes that used to cost a few dollars are considered collectors items now...and command some unreal prices :O
The best thing is to design your own....I could probably make copies of the Combat Wombat we used to fly....but there just isn't enough participation anymore...plus the motors are getting harder to get too..as everything is going electric now

They must have seen you playing kamikaze on the rear ends of your competitors planes :haha:

Here, with real planes flying overhead all the time, they have shut down all the places guy's used to fly in ( all city and county parks) to all model aircraft flying. Something about them being to dangerous to fly around spectators or purposely rammed into real aircraft during their landing approach. :/

That too....RC airfields are getting less and less....it's a good chance that's the reason everyone went with helicopters first...then drones....Now the guys with the drones are making trouble lol.....think some of them are becoming peeping Toms with those silent beauties....heard in Cali...they have police flying around with jammers that send a drone back to whomever is flying it...so they can bust them :haha: :haha:

Haven't seen any news reporting of drone use around here but do see them for sale in the largest rc shop. Know the police here don't like the idea of someone filming them without them knowing it, and the Feds are watching for any misuse of them.

Almost started my rc use why back when on Okinawa with a big Huey, until I watched a guy trying his first flight in a big vacant parking lot. He got it hovering about 2 inches off the ground when a light breeze picked up pushing it quickly about 10 yds. across the lot into the lots fence before he could react and it kind of blew up when it hit. :O

Decided right then to stay on the ground or in the water if I pursued the rc sport. !!!

Took a different route Giant...went from planes to boats...back then there weren't any electric models ...so they were fast ...it was fun for awhile ...it got old when the motors took in water or just ran out of gas.....swimming or casting to retrieve them got old real fast lol

You can't be so old that you didn't have the Lindberg PT 109 and Blue devil destroyers around.
Only needed the cheapest 4 channel rc unit to make them work pretty well( must admit that the speed control was a rather rudimentary mechanical thing run off a huge servo and unless you could make one of the homemade non electric bilge pumps no matter how much you greased the propeller shaft shroud they would start to fill with water when run).

The PT 109 looked pretty good running at full speed.

Had to be careful with the destroyer as it capsized pretty easy if there were any waves. My brother lost his out in a lake when some do people tried to get his back in after he ran out of power and the wake from their boat flipped and sank it.

Lets wait until Toni is done and see if he'll want to post with the rest of us. I think Alpha was going to tell him about it. There is also one being done by guido but not to sure how far along he is or if he is looking at the other build threads of HL Abrams.
