What Is The Best Recoil Unit For Me
Right i want a gun recoil unit for my late tiger 1, i dont know much about them but i want one that looks realistic when it recoils, so what do i need, do i need a metal barrel and mantlet ? do they plug straight into the boards ( i have a rx14) ? do the recoil units also do the gun elevation ? do they flash ? who sells them ? how hard are they to fit ? i have a budget of about £100 but i would like some change to spend on the KT

Re: What Is The Best Recoil Unit For Me
Hi Keith Had 2 asiatam recoil units had nothing but trouble with both of them stick working when they feel like it having to change microswitches on both .
Have converted a BB gun to recoil and it works very well indeed have, also converted the latest recoil for heng long the type in the stug this also works very well .
All in all the only one I would buy would be the Heng long along with the new type of gun elevation these are very good and dont cost to much thats if you can find someone here in the U.K. That has them RCcommaned has them for sale and they dont cost the earth but then you will have a large postage and maybe customs to pay .Or I could send you the post I did on RCU recoiling firing BB gun but that has feed problems and you will have to cut the hull and turret to get it in.
There are 2 types of mod on the new recoil unit mine(posted on here and Panzerketten by extra dry) and YHR (Check his post on RCU)who has done it differantly to me but it works well and is easy to mod.
So the choice is yours but be warned about the asiatam units they give you the option of removing the rear bin and fitting the lifting lug but IMO not reliable or go for moding a BB gun the off the shelf unit new type Heng Long with the new elevation unit or you could use the old one if you wish.
regards pete

Hi Keith
I've fitted the asiatam units to two of my tanks without any of the problems that Pete has had. Might be a hit and miss thing with their quality control. The micro switches on the unit are quite fragile but mine worked fine. Pete's recoil mod is also really good, they are both much more realistic than the Tamiya recoil unit.
Check out my video of Pete's mod

Re: What Is The Best Recoil Unit For Me
Hi Gent's one BIG question here RE recoil unit's. I have noticed on the Tamiya recoil system the gun recoils and returns at the same speed both ways. The net result is a not to realistic action. Now for the question bit Looking at the ( expensive ) recoil upgrade for the Tamiya system it seems that all they have done is remade the cam wheel in metal BUT removed the teeth that should be used in the recoil part of the cycle. This allows the spring system they have added to pull the barrel back for a "snap action" recoil. The worm drive then picks up the cam wheel at the end of the recoil and then "motors" the gun back to a fully extended position. I know there is also an electronics package supplied with this upgrade. Has anyone tried removing the recoil section of teeth on a plastic cam wheel and adding an extension spring to get that "snap" back action. I will admit I don't know if the standard Tamiya recoil electronics will work with this. Out of curiosity can anyone tell me where I might get a replacement plastic cam for a Tamiya recoil ?. I may have a go at this myself IF spares are avalible
as in theory it would seem workable and one of the most reliable options for a recoil system IMO . All the best for now

Another HL with Tamiya recoil unit...with pics for Rob....
And yes Iam with Alan on this one: "is a not to realistic action" Check: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKYbz_25DGM
YHR have made some nice progress with the new HL recoil unit (from Stug) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSB3I750qnc
