ABE, The ring has a number of purposes, It locates the turret so that it does not wear it's way through the body of the Tank as it turns, In conjunction with the turret ring it acts as a bearing to absorb the weight of the turret which would otherwise split the body eg An aircraft engineer to stop a crack spreading, they will drill a hole exactly in the centre point of the end of the split or crack, this equalises the stress in all directions. and the hight of the turret is always the same while it rides on the body because the reinforcement provided by the ridge of the ring prevents flex in the Tank body. shaun

interesting the difference in thickness of the metal used for the tow cable tie down brackets...one way much thinner than the other...why would that be..is not a new built and the other original?

Yes, the nearby one is original, the distant one is a fake.

The real turret clears the hull surface by approximately 1cm.

Thank you David....that ring is coming off.

All the ring does is raise the turret...its a gonner. I am keeping the black geared ring and fitting the RC turn mechanism ( with the motor..but without the motor) to ensure the turret turns nicely.

You'd think they would have copied the original one! It looks anemic compared to the original! Why would they do this...weird and a bit of a bad show IMO.

Rings gone and the Turret does not foul and sits perfectly so real result. Will be adding a 0.7 ish ring of styrene to get the gap to the real Tiger 1cm gap.

Shaving off the watertight panel so it can be re-applied as a stand off panel on lugs as per David photo.

Rather than add a styrene ring for the turret to pivot on, I have used a circle-cutter to make rings out of see-through colored notebook dividers. They measure between .005" and .007" thick, and they are 'slippery' enough to allow a good bearing surface. They are awfully bright, though, so cut them just big enough not to show past the edge of the turret. When I've needed a thicker turret bearing, I've used the re-sealable plastic tops from large metal cans. These can run between .025" and .040" thick, and are made of a nylon-type material; so they won't take glue but are pretty slippery as well. -Mike

Mike, very inventive ideas..I always enjoy when people find alternative uses for objects

As for the rings, I have just cut them using a circle cutter in styrene so job done. In the middle of milliputting weld seams so got to go..thanks for looking in

Still here...just a slipped chisel into the thumb...it actually spurted like in the movies , over my T shirt and on the tank too

Hey ho on we go

Did some milliputing tonight but it was hard work...not sure my technique is right as the milliput doesn't seem to stick enough and easily comes out when trying to level it off with a chisel blade...took ages and I still have loads to do...JEEZ

BTW, using Tanks for the memory's wood chisel approach. Thanks Tanks for the heads up on this technique.
