That is really looking the muts now Alwyn.
It is a shame though that there are anly limited wheels and tyres to suite our scale.
This is wher some nice chap with a 3d printer could be very handy.

Re: AEC Matador gun tractor 1/16 scratch build
Thanks guys, that Laffly must qualify as the most ridiculous looking vehicle ever invented Painless! What on earth did they use it for? Totally agree about the wheels swamprat, we really need to find someone who can produce particular scale wheels, then we can mould and cast whatever we need from that. Regards Alwyn.

Alwyn,
As far as I can determine, it was an early war answer to troop transport. The truck is made up of a truck and a command car and would separate into two vehicles. A true challenge to model. For the life of me, I cannot figure out or find a photo of the two components separated.
regards,
Painless

Re: AEC Matador gun tractor 1/16 scratch build
Hi Painless, I looked on google and found some diagrams of how that thing is put together, and it is the wierdest thing I have ever seen. The vehicle has separate transmissions on each side, front and back, with a big central transfer box, the maintenance must have been beyond a nightmare! Having said that they did a tank killer version with a 75mm gun mounted on the back and apparently it was very successful in the early stages of the war.
Anyway I think that vehicle may be a step beyond where I want to go at the moment, but definitely one to consider for the future.
Regards. Alwyn

It certainly looks like you have discovered a niche Alwyn, you seem to have certain skill when it comes to trucks, and long may it continue.

Well back from Malta to a foot of snow so unpacked the cases, cleared enough of the drive to get in/out, and back to work on the Matador.

Coming along but still lots to do. I bought a 1/72 airfix kit with a matador and 5 1/2 inch gun so I will probably have a shot at building that to complement the tractor. It looks pretty simple and I have some styrene tube of about the right size for the barrel and the carraige looks straightforward.

Wow! Absolutely fabulous Alwyn. Cant wait to see the finished result. I may be tempted to have a go myself after building the Tamiya KT oh and finally getting to move house. Keep up the good work.

Simply brilliant, if any manufacturer had the sense to produce the type of trucks that you are building they would sell shed loads of them.
