Board up in smoke

Post by Nathan2253 »

So I just purchased an Tiger1. My son just opened it up to see how it worked. After a few minutes it started to smoke and let out a pop sound. Not sure what burned up. Also not sure if it's worth it to send back or to fix with better electronics. I've heard Heng Long has a history of problems. Which way should I go. If I decide to fix it should I just buy replacement parts or upgrade to better ones? Where do I find better built parts?

Hi nathan might be the control board its marked rx18 on it most likely unless its the new 2.4 ghz. They are not too expensive, check out forgebears internet shop on ebay , dave is one of the best sellers there is and a forum member and highly recommended. the board is a plug n play module simply unplug the leads and reconnect to the new one in the same order. if it is a new type 2.4 ghz type its again a matter of disconnecting the leads and reconnecting the leads in same order but the new type modules need binding to the hand held controller.

Hi Welcome to the forum ,wow what a bad start, but you don't seem down hearted, makes me think you have been bitten by the armoutitus bug which is very bad there is no known cure .

On the up side it isn't hard to replace the board all you need to know is which one is it . Dave has most of them instock . if you want to up graded the electrics to have better sounds the IBU is very good.

A new RX18 is pretty cheap, so if it has blown (and yes they do sometimes) then you can replace it very easily.

If you are looking to make the tank sound realistic then it would be better to skip replacing the RX18 and install an aftermarket board. You won't go back to an RX18 afterwards, and will have a much nicer tank to drive.

It depends on your budget really. Welcome to Credit Card Tank Land :haha: :haha: :haha:

What probably happened was when your son opened the tank...the wire for the antenna ...it has a protection cover over it...sometimes that slides out of place and will contact the mother board....happened to me...but it was my fault as I was testing it ...you'd be surprised how fast the board will short when that lead crosses a circuit 8O

Your RX is probably ok... don't think yours has the 2.4,,,,but with that said...upgrading to the 2.4 gig rig isn't a bad idea right now...there is no sense in sticking with the crystal set...when the 2.4 rig is much better in so many ways....and the change out is easy ...all you do is do a direct switch out with the wires...and remove the old mother board and toss it in the trash :D ...not to mention the cost is nominal...about 70dollars US...may be a little more in the UK I don't know for sure

Good Luck

Hi Nathan,

Welcome to the forum. Like others have said it is reasonably cheap to the replace the HL electronics if your thinking of getting better electronics check this link out which briefly details the available options.
