Removing gear box from Sturm Tiger

Removing gear box from Sturm Tiger

Hi guys.

I saw the thread on shimming your basic metal gearbox.

But I Can not get the gearboxes out of the lower hull.

All screws in the bottom has been removed. And the metal support beam across the hull as well.
The metal plate attached to the gearboxes is loosened, but I do not know how to deattach it further.

Also, how do I get the gearboxes out of the hull? Are the axles removable or?

Please send pictures if possible

Isn't your Sturm Lower Hull the same as a Tiger Hull... just take out the six screws that hold the gearbox to the support plate...no need to remove the plate itself ...remove the sprockets and lift them out... sometimes you have to give them a little jiggle ;)

As far as I can tell, the chassis is the as the Tiger 1. But it does not seem enough to remove the screws underneath the bottom plate?

How do I take the axles out? Removing the drivewheel is no problem. But even if I manage that, the position of the motors on top of eachother makes it difficult to pull the gearbox inwards towards the middle og the chassis...?

I don't own one...but I think the Torro Chassis is much like the Taigen...Usually you don't need to take the entire plate off there should be three screws Holding each gearbox in place...usually phillips..one in the front one on the side and one under the gears...beneath the motor pinion...there is usually enough space to slide a skinny phillips in there...Usually once all three are out..it's just a matter of jiggling them around a bit to clearance the motors and axles till they can be lifted out

You need to make sure that the gear set are actually off the mounting plate separately. You then have to swing the top gearset up while keeping the axle in the opening and then slide the lower gearset from underneath it. Then you can remove the top gear set.

It takes a little bit of jiggling and it is not straight forward.

Yup ...Jiggling the gearboxes till the motors clear each other and the axles clear the Hull can be pretty tricky 8O

Hi again.

A friday Night Well spent with removing and shimming the standard metal gearboxes.

Not troubleless, but gave a lot of experience. Almost burned one of the engines (-:

Next plan is to install axle supports and metal drive wheel/idler.

Perhaps even a black steel gearbox. Anyone has Got any experience with any of these things?

I regards of mounting supports and the alignment of the black steel boxes

LOL...Good to hear you got the gearboxes out...bad to hear you almost burned out a motor 8O ...shim too tight?...
Nothing beats just sitting there and working on it though...as you say..you gained experience :thumbup:

Alpha: I guess the shimming was a little too tight all though I could not tell visually.

My Sturm Tiger is currently performing quite nicely. So do not want to hurt it too much.

That is why I only shimmed the left gearbox, since it had the worst play. And decided to put every bit back in its place (-:

I have added metal tracks. And I am planning either metal drive wheels+idler and axle support.
Or maybe an entire New gearbox as well.

What is your take on that?
