It looked like all the wiring was soldered to the main board, so I should be able to trace them all OK and just replace with the wiring/plugs that come with the board I'm ordering, is a fan a necessity for prolonging its life? and if so what's recommended, and should it just be wired into the power feed to the board so as it running all the time the switch is on?

Some find it beneficial... I haven't really found purpose in it as adding a fan drains the battery faster....but those who do use low voltage computer Cpu units...smaller the better ...and yes... I think the way you describe the hook up would be best... unless of course you are going to add a completely independent circuit for the fan alone

That would be the beauty of just going to the 2.4 rig....you don't need that extra board anymore....the benefits also include you don't need antennas....and you get better range and smoother control

I'm not sure about there in the UK...but here in the states... the price difference is nominal about 20 dollars or so...about 8 pounds...as complete crystal sets with the receiver board.. run about 60 dollars...and the 2.4s around 70.... the extra would be because you need a power lead..which is about 4 to 8 dollars...the crystal units usually include all the wires

There in the UK... I've seen Welsh with both units... and forgebear with the crystal ...complete packages ...though I think they are a tad higher in price than here

The controller that came with your tank goes out with the current board .... either set you choose ..if you get the package comes with a new one...the crystal package will already have matching crystals

PS...You can see why it's sometimes better to pop the few extra dollars to level up when purchasing a tank usually for about 20 to 30 dollars the tank has more functions or better parts

Thanks!but I think I may have a problem if I will need a new transmitter, the RX-18/2 2.4 ghz over here seems to be about £60, the RX-18 board with leads is just £12.50 and a new receiver board is just £3.95, so a big difference, however if I cannot use the original transmitter/controller I will have to budget for that too...so much for doing this on a budget.

PS I only paid £45 for the tank LOL!

Well after further checking, and finding I will need not only the RX-18, a receiver board and Cristal and a new transmitter/controlled which seem to be more expensive than the 2.4ghz unit, so I think I will be shelving the RX-18 idea in favor of the 2.4ghz conversion at a later date.

One further question, can the motors speed be reduced by fitting an in line resistor? or will this interfere with the existing control board? I have heard it can be done with the turret motor to make the turn speed more realistic, mind you with the 2014 model this also seems to be fixed.

Never tried that on any of my tanks... the ABC type model "might" benefit.... but the speed would be affected across the entire range....When you do upgrade it is probably not necessary ... the RX will do the speed control for you to a certain degree
