The filament is PLA which does look kind of rough. I can also use ABS which looks the same when printed but melts with plastic glue or Acetone so can be smoothed down easily.

I'm just starting out with this 3D printing so I've still got a lot to learn.
This guy had a lot of CAD experience but only started 3D printing in January and hes already doing this -

And he's doing this on the same printer as the one I've got.
Also there are new materials coming out all the time, Flexible ABS (great for making tyres) and Soluble ABS which you can use to support complicated prints then just wash away.
I've been making my hobby pay for a long time but this 3D printing is a whole new world.
