T34 vs Tiger

Post by wibblywobbly »

Many of you have been brought up on World of Tanks may not be aware of a sim that predated it, called T34 vs Tiger. The company that wrote it, Lighthouse Productions, released it too soon and the bugs got it a bad press. They went bust, and though all of the bugfixes were on a laptop, a programmer took the laptop in lieu of unpaid wages and refused to release them unless someone paid him.

No one coughed up, he sold the laptop to someone who probably had no idea that they had just bought a goldmine, and that was that.

Possible sources for the game are here, I haven't tried them as I have an original CD:
http://gamespace.daemon-tools.cc/eng/re ... 4-vs-tiger
http://megagames.com/download/261491/0
http://www.game9h.com/2013/11/wwii-batt ... tiger.html

One band of players decided to rewrite the code, and spent a couple of years on it, I even joined them at one point for testing, they were scattered all over Europe. Unfortunately the guy leading the project died of cancer at a fairly young age, and eventually the project died.....or so I thought, just been digging and found that the last MMP7 update was saved into a dropbox.... https://www.dropbox.com/s/nuf3avp86y1aq ... n.rar?dl=0 and its free, if you get lucky you can play on Gameranger as far as I know.

Over on the Subsim forum, another guy by the name of Zeewolf, who had no programming skills whatsoever, started modifying what was now a game in the public domain. I just checked up on his progress (its been going for years), and here is a video of what the game now does.

For anyone that has never played this game, it is a simulator, not a shoot em up, nothing like WOT at all. You have to drive the tank in exactly the same way as you would drive a real one, and have a driver, gunner and commander to control. I just downloaded MMP7, I might try Zeewolf's expansion pack (it's not free), but I think I am right in saying that it isn't multiplayer.

I was part of the team { one of the main testers } of the MMP7..alas all the guys gave up on it, we tried various things to get it to work, but poorly optimization caused its downfall, that and the way we struggled to get content added. I still have my copy lying around somewhere

You are a part of gaming history. It was an amazingly realistic game, and ahead of its time. I still have my copy, and can still remember playing it with other guys from all over Europe.
