Just bought an airfix and now when i see its size............where do i put it ?

i'd love to build it cos i've never built a plane this scale other than balsa giiders. I've seen you can put an electric motor in it. which means if i put the motor in it..can i encase it within the plastic merlin enine ?

i could sell it on....but i paid £35 for it which i thought was a bargain........

You made me smile Doc because I build 1/10 and they do take up space BUT with a fixed undercarriage or an extended retractable undercarriage it allows me to park Tanks underneath the mainplane. :haha: shaun

Hi Doc,

Unfortunately it's either the Merlin engine you model or you replace it with said motor and keep the cowlings buttoned up.

Either or I'm afraid :(

Doc,

Good choice and in my opinion the only ever correct choice.

You cannot deny a spitfire its Merlin be it real or model.

Hate me at this festive time but to be absolutely accurate later marks of Spitfire were fitted with the Rolls Royce Griffon, I don't know but I can guess the reason, the Mustang being a long range fighter and in great demand to escort the 8th Air Force bombers across Europe was equipped with the Merlin, most of them being licence built by Packard, the Supermarine Seafire flying off the Royal Navy's carriers also used the engine and not to be forgotten was the Hurricane which by then was primarily used as a Tank buster,I am not sure when the Hurricane was replaced in that role by the Typhoon and Tempest, the Spitfire was not as vital to the air defence of the UK by 1944, and of course the Lancaster used 4 Merlins to the Spitfires one, so this very efficient engine was in great demand and had to be rationed, and not to be forgotten was it's use as a Tank engine although I think that was after WW2 when it went into the Centurian. shaun

Hi Jarndice,

Looking at Docs post he is building a mark 5b variant of the Spitfire. These models were always fitted with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

It was only from the Mark 9 Spitfires that they started to introduce the Griffon engine.

Merlin my friend I knew about the airframe/engine changeover but I was working on the broader point, a number of people are under the impression that the Spitfire of all marks was fitted with the Rolls Royce Merlin and I was just (rather ineptly) explaining that the later model had a different engine and why, indeed the later models had a different mainplane and in many respects the only thing they shared with K5054 was the name, the MK 22/24 were really quite different aircraft with greatly expanded roles from the original point defence fighter of the Battle of Britain, It is Docs thread but it is not only Doc who reads it.   shaun

Hey Doc look forward to seeing your vb! I skipped over it in war thunder but it's a cool looking plane.

Slightly unrelated but personally I love the griffon engined versions, they're proper beast to fly in war thunder!
