New Shoes for the 1/35 RC Tamiya Tiger 1

Post by PainlessWolf »

Seriously, this is my oldest Tiger and the only RC Tamiya item I own. It's responsible for starting me down the tanking road again some 15 years ago. I've been looking for proper replacement tracks for some time. The originals hardened up a few years ago so I was forced to stop running it. I considered metal tracks from Fruilmetal or Spade Ace but worried about stripping the gearbox. I didn't want to replace the originals with more Tamiya tracks. I knew there was better detailing and flexibility out there. Pan to today and receiving a set of Cyber Hobby Tiger 1 tracks from a nice fellow named Peter in the Czech Republic. These are very nicely detailed, flexible and a perfect fit. I'll take a little time to paint and weather during the daylight hours and my oldest and only Tamiya Tiger will be back on the road. Pics:

Today was absolutely beautiful, a perfect day to get out the rattle cans and tank parts. Using Tamiya's excellent Gunmetal enamel, I put a couple of light coats on to cover the molded yellow of the tracks. I had no interest in using too much paint. That would have covered the tracks' fine detail and took away from the desired flexibility. After sufficient drying time, out came Tamiya's weathering kits. I used rust then worn metal with a touch of dust to finish the job. I'm very pleased with the results. The old Tiger looks great crawling around on the countertop now. Next bit of fun is too remove the top and clean and regrease the gearboxes. That's a job for another day. Pics:

Ed,
Thank you! It's always good fun and very satisfying to fix up the older ones and get them running again.

Good morning, Jack,
Yessir, Tamiya has an entire line of 1/35 RC tanks. They cost roughly the same ( or more ) than regular full option HL 1/16 tanks. My Tiger 1 was one of the first ones to come out and is fairly primitive compared to the new versions which can use Tamiya's IR Battling system. There is also a fellow who goes around making regular 1/35 model tanks from various makers into full RC capable tanks. His link is: http://www.35rctank.com/index.html

Good afternoon, Kiaser,
No problem. I have RC tanks in all scales from 1/144 ( still looking for replacement tracks for that one ) to 1/6. They all have to be kept maint'd to be runners as the years go by. ;o)

Hey Painless...the Fruimodel tracks are not bad....they do have a bit of weight...but I don't think they will harm gearboxes....they are very well cast...and move freely ...They do cost twice as much as the plastic workable tracks...but on occasion you can find second hand ones ...especially for common tanks like the Tiger and Sherman ;) ...I guess some guys give up when they look at the packets of links :haha:

Alpha,
Thanks for the heads up! I'll get a set and put them back for when anything happens to these new flexible tracks.

Just using this old thread as the tank in question received another upgrade. This is my 1/35 Tamiya RC Tiger 1 and I had been debating lately ( while working on Mike's 1/16 version ) whether or not to do any more metal add-ons to it. Common sense was soundly defeated and these arrived in the mail yesterday. Pic:

P.S. Now I am debating buying new gearboxes for it and getting the internal parts to make the main gun elevate like the newer versions
