Increasing amplifier output

Post by tom_tom_go »

Hi,

Is there a way to make an existing amplifier more powerful?

Reason I ask is my acoustic smoker works better when the louder horn noise from the amplifier is played. The engine running noise is not as loud as the horn so the smoke output is not as good.

This is the amp I am using:

Bit clueless when it comes to amps so appreciate advice.

Cheers!

My guess is that it will make no difference. I'm guessing that the raw audio signal is what is being read, not the amplified one. If I'm right the answer would be to increase the decibels of the engine recording, pre-amplification. Can you modify the recording or increase the signal by a preamp?

Try speaking to the manufacturers of the acoustic smoker who should be able to advise.

You could always add a power amp plugged into the output from the sound card and then run that to the speaker

The smoker is one I have made and you can see in this video the smoke output is much better when the engine first starts up and when the horn is blown (because they are louder sounds):

I can't edit the sound files unfortunately, it's a sealed unit.

I have little space to add any kind of booster to the speaker, what did you have in mind - examples?

Nice idea. How does the smoker measure the sound and where does it hook up - to the preamp, the amplifier or the amplifiers output? The reason l ask is so that we can respond. If its from the amp output then you can simply swap out the amp for a small amplifier module with greater output (there are lots of tiny examples on e-bay, all cheap as chips and they work fine). If you have taken the signal at preamp stage you could just add an adjustable secondary preamp, again, cheap off eBay.

The speaker is connected directly to the sound card which has a built in amplifier.

Yes, but where does your smoker connect?? How does it know how loud the sound is - via a microphone! ;)

Sorry, the smoker heating element runs at a constant voltage directly from the battery.

It's a very simple setup. The louder the sound the more smoke is forced out of the smoke unit.

So why/how does the constant voltage smoker produce more smoke when the sound is louder? I'm not giving up.now!
