Found some tools I made.

Yay, I'm so chuffed.
I've been sorting out some stuff, and found these two down my shed where they wasn't meant to be.

On the left is a depth gauge I made at school at about 13/14, needs a ruler to measure, but good for rough measurements.
On the right is an adjustable square, I believe the blade is possibly hardened gauge plate, the handle would be another type of hardened tool steel. I made this in my second or third year of apprenticeship over 40 years ago lol.
It was a test piece. All dimensions, square and parallel had to be ground within 1/10,000th of an inch, including the grove in the blade and the blade seating in the handle.

Just thought I'd share. The German is a 4 inch Raiders of the Lost Ark figure for size reference.

When I was 13/14 I made a wooden stool in woodworking class, My mother gave it to my young Sister it was then passed to my Daughter who has given it to my Grand Daughter,
Not much longer to go and the Darn thing will have outlived me

A few years ago I got a plumb bob back that I made at school and gave to my father. My nephew still has the wooden truck and toy castle I made him when I was 14 and 15 respectively. And I believe his older sister, my niece that's only 7 years younger than me still has the table lamp I made her between the truck and castle lol.

I too have old gadgets made during the arduous apprenticeship process, none of which I still have.
The tutors were all hard core career English engineers & tool makers, grey dust coat types, and particularly fastidious & savage on the weak or under performing!
I pulled on a world a hurt when the process I used for screw cutting on a lathe was in direct contradiction to that which they subscribed to, but that’s how I got taught at work & therefore had to carry out.
We made a pair of gauge blocks or Vee blocks. About 50mm square with all sorts of angles formed in them, which then were case hardened & surface ground.
All the time into those and I could turn out dozens of pipe flanges at work in the same time !
I suppose it was character building !
One engineering teacher I had was ex Red Beret para and man he was hard. Any dumbass with hands in pockets in the cold of an NZ winter outside class sent the entire class on a sprint across a frost covered field until we were apparently warm enough to pay attention!!

Oh wow, I don't think I could have stuck at that job, I hate running.

I still have my matching pair of case hardened V blocks somewhere

Also got a rather interesting cyanide hardened machine vice I made somewhere

Thinking back, one of the guys I worked with did his apprenticeship at a place called Patons Engineering.
Now the bloke that owned it Eric Paton- was very old school.
In the morning at start time, Mr Paton(and that is all you ever called him) stood out on the balcony of his office cap off, and announced "good morning lads" to which the chorus replied "good morning Mr Paton" and he placed his hat on his head-the lads did the same -and commenced work.
On a Friday Mr Paton would select the 2 best performing apprentices & they would go around to his house, payed for the day, and do any odd jobs Mrs Paton wanted taken care of. Lawns, gardening, whatever was required.
She would provide tea and the best scones & jam on the planet, then they would return & either carry on at work, or go home as timing permitted !!
I had a toolmaker once that refused to operate any machine that he deemed not clean enough, used to sit & read the paper & say nothing until it was cleaned top a level he accepted...............I'd have made him clean it, or at least get on with it, or run him off

The story's I could tell about my toolmaker would fill a book,
My immediate boss in my apprenticeship was a Toolmaker, and I called him Sir,
He knew everything about all matters mechanical, He was strict but very fair,
He was the proud owner of a silver Austin Westminster which was immaculate,
When it was raining he would tell me to forget the bike boy,
I was always "Boy",
Now if you are into health and safety turn away, At the end of work we would clean our oil covered hands by plunging them into a drum of old oil then into a sack of wood shavings, Perfect
Still in my grease covered overalls onto my bike for the 5 mile ride home, But when it was raining it was hot water and soap, overalls off, Toetectors wiped down and into the car for a quiet drive home where he would escort me to the front door,
My Father would invite him in for tea and my progress would then take a hammering,
I hated rainy afternoons
