As for being the correct controller, if both the tank and the controller have the ABC switch, they will be compatible.

Which has just reminded me of another thing to look for.
In the bulldog's battery compartment, does it have one of those small 01 components? I ask because when Heng Long changed to crystals, the ABC switch was changed to a two position on/off switch for a smoker.
If that is the case, then you do have the wrong controller.

Binding is for 2.4 gig equipment.

You have the older crystal and ABC set ups, they should always be compatible providing both the tank and controllers are the same, as in, both on same letter, or both have same numbered crystal, with the Tx in transmitter/controller, and Rx in the tank.

You said the Pershing also had the number one crystal.
If that's the case, try using the Pershing controller with the panzer 3. That's providing the panzer 3 has the same number crystal in its battery compartment.

Also, if that is the case about the panzer 3 and the Pershing controllers having the number 01 crystal, it would be a good idea to try the panzer 3 controller with the Pershing, that way we can find out if that controller is working.

What I’m observing is the perfect path to purchasing a fairly inexpensive after market board/transmitter combination kit like Taigen V3 or Heng Long TK 6.1s or something similar. Should be fairly easy to install and you’ll be enjoying driving and listening to your awesome tank in no time. And with fresh electronics!!
Of course double check with us before you purchase any electronics for a wide variety of opinions ;) and make sure you’re having fun. Some YouTube RC Tank videos can be an excellent resource for seeing what’s available and how it runs and sounds.

Jimster I too would suggest upgrading to the 6.0 or which ever, they are quite cheap still but quite a lot better than all previous generations
