hello all my name is Sean,
been interested in RC Tanks for a few years,
I am currently working in Hohenfels Bavaria for the American Army.
haven't got a tank yet, so just trying to decide whats best.

Hi Sean, Welcome to the Forum
When you do decide to buy your Tanks there are some very good dealers in Germany including Dom @ www.rctank.de/ who is an official Taigen dealer,
And there is www.axels-modellbau-shop.de/ who specialises in Tamiya Tanks,
Also www.heng-long-panzer.de/ who surprisingly deals in Heng Long Tanks,
All of these German Based dealers have very full stocks of spares and upgrades and are totally trustworthy.

been looking at the sites you mentioned spoilt for choice TBH.
thinking a low coast heng long for first tank then
spend winter upgrading.

Sean If you do buy a Heng Long Tank do make sure it has a 6.0 or a 6.3 control board,
These are the latest and very good for a basic 1/16 Tank.
Also be wary of ordering a "Full Metal" Tank because you need to check if the "Metal" Gearboxes are Black Steel or Grey "Pot" Metal,
The Steel gearboxes are good the Pot metal ones are worse than the basic fit nylon gearboxes,
Don't mistake me the latest Heng Long Tanks are a bit of a bargain but when you get it out of its box check all the wiring and the general assembly as a Friday special sometimes slips through.

As he says, you are well served with knowledgeable, dependable, suppliers there, and so getting started should be easy, once you've decided what decade, or historical event, you want your future beast to come from. There are some great beers to be enjoyed in Bavaria, and the local cuisine has much to offer. Enjoy

Welcome to the forum! I did the exact same thing. I got an inexpensive Heng Long Tiger 1 and spent the winter upgrading. After the dust settled the only Heng Long part remaining on my tank was the upper hull. Joke was on me. However it was a great learning journey.

Yes, Mr jarndice has given you some sound advice that fits your requirements.
I would like to add, I rather like the slightly earlier dual sound Heng Long tanks (I believe they're series 5) for a basic runner. They should be a little cheaper, especially good if you are intending to replace the electronics eventually.

I'm really interested in the Heng Long Chally2. just undecided to go for mostly plastic or get the metal track and wheel upgrades.
I've worked in Bavaria for the past 4 years so love the beers and the cuisine.
had enough of real tanks during my time in the Army (British)

I remember some time back we had a discussion about Plastic versus Metal,
In favour of Plastic was longevity and cheapness plus easier to fix,
In favour of Metal, it gives the Tank the "Look" of a Tank, It squats with the weight on the suspension and it rides like a Tank unlike the Plastic Tank that rides like a demented pogo stick,
Remember if you buy Metal Tracks you will need Metal wheels and Metal Suspension and Metal Gearboxes and if it is available a Metal Hull,
It is a rule of thumb that you will face the law of diminishing returns going Metal BUT being a stickler for realism I always pay the extra and go all Metal because the sheer bulk gives it the right feel of a Tank.
But if you are on a budget Go Plastic and upgrade as the pennies become available
Remember don't rush to buy the first Tank you see it will still be there tomorrow,
This probably is the most fun part working through websites trying to decide which Tank and what upgrades and most important of all what dealer to choose.
