This is I!

Post by General Jumbo01 »

Hi y'all. Having spent a lifetime making models, both professionally and as a hobby (obsession?), and running National and World championships in 1/10 cars series, writing for hobby mags and generally financing my hobbies via sponsorship....at 65 l decided to retire from this full time work (l was able to retire from real work at 50) and enjoy RC tanks, trucks, boats, drones and computer controlled model railways. Although my career has been in banking and IT, its taken me months to successfully logon this forum when a 'registration email' went missing - it's a long story!! Need to talk to admin...

Anyway, that's the boring bit - now down to what were all here for - RC military modelling. Over the past couple of years it's all become affordable as the far east has learnt all they can from the West and now take a lead in models and electronics. If it wasn't Tamiya it was shunned. No more, and Heng Long's trucks, for example, for under 30 quid each provide the basis of a very good scale truck by simply buying two to give you a 6x6 and bining ALL the electronics and fitting Chinese made mini servos, esc, motor, Radio gear etc and by doing what we do (bashing!) we can make a great finished model for less than £100. All made possible by eBay - there may be others out there but....

As a result, in the past two years, I've built over 10 tanks, 4 military trucks - one a Tamiya / Bruder tank transporter, and still found time to turn a rare 1950's Vosper 'pond boat's into a highly detailed and fully operational RC boat plus a modern tongue in cheek fast (as in destroy your local pond!) boat, and drones (love 'em or hate them, once experienced they're hard to put down - in either sense).

That's more than enough from me. Loving this forum and can't wait to play ;)

Gen. Jumbo 01. BTW, how did that guy control so many models back then - no 2.4ghz!

Hi, yes there was a problem with the registration emails a long while back, but not of the forum's making, it was sorted once discovered though, so apologies for the hiccup.

Good to see that you have discovered RC Tanks, there is a wealth of knowledge on here so anything that you want to know, just fire away.

Which bank were you with? Coincidentally my background was also in banking and IT??

Hi WW, l was with NatWest from '88 to 2005 when l took early retirement from running their IT 6Operations after getting them free from IBM and onto MS distributed (as one of two world pilots) but, just as things were taking off, the dumb investors decided to trade NWB shares for RBS and the rest is history. I migrated the systems to their toy town systems in Edinburgh and got out quick, just before RBS apps ground to a halt overnight - took them a fortnight off air to unravel that mess! I don't miss working in the city but l do miss riding to work at 6am for a 7am cooked breakfast in an empty canteen! Lived like Lords;)

I was Natwest too. Registrars Dept in Bristol. They sold the creaking business to RBS before the NWB sell out, then RBS realised what they had bought and sold it to Computershare...who shut down the RBS Registrars in Edinburgh and moved everything to Bristol. I used to go up to the London place, can't remember the name of it (it had a pub inside?) when the initial Taurus project was underway to convert to electronic share trading. That was abandoned £15m in, and Crest replaced it. Like you say, it was a good life, but I went contracting designing and testing, and then got out altogether when I realised that my brain was going to fry if I carried on job hopping.

There were a few places in the City but the centre of NW IT was Goldman's Fields. It was a relatively new specialist building (city?) that had several restaurants and a pub, together with pubs surrounding it. Shortly after the function was all moved to Edinburgh the wrecking team moved in a laid it all to waste. The 6 massive cruise liner diesels that were built into the shell to provide emergency power were sold as scrap (l've stood in one of the cylinders during maintenance!) so fed the grid no longer. I visited Bristol several times to be presented with the business plans, as Birmingham, Cardiff....well, we had business all over! Always left early on a Thursday though - Club race night!

BTW, lets not discriminate by only including skinny Sheilas. I prefer slightly curvy ones, you ask my ex-wife......

Now what site is this? Oh yes - tanks...focus Jumbo!

Thanks for the welcome. Your user name suggests a fellow love of Capris? This was my very first car - started life as a 12 month old mk1, 3 ltr V6 GT XLR. Alarmed my neighbours after a couple of weeks by taking a cutter to the bodywork, modded with every group 2 part that Ford Boreham RS could acquire and finished in Ferrari Ross Chiaro. After the 3 yr project was completed, it alarmed everyone within 3 miles when it was started. It ran over 145 on the stretch between Dartford and Brands Hatch. It was a firm favourite with the met police!

It was finally cremated in 2000 when an entire industrial estate where it was being stored went up. Probably for the best as l could never sold it and it was keeping me poor!

If its not the car but the place you like, then sorry and l know nothing off the island whatsoever ImageImage
