I agree since I did this MOD I've started to reinstall smokers in my tanks toocapt midnight wrote:I've done this mod to a couple of my smokers. Works fantastic! Now I'm gonna have to put the smokers back in the rest of my tanks!

Re: HL smoker pump replaced with a fan
Holy necro-threading.. But eh.. It works like a charm. Question remains: Why didn't Í think of it before. I got oodles of small fans, sourced from anywhere I saw some. I work in ICT as a storage specialist, so plenty of peculiar old hardware around, inclúding tiny fans from deceased KVM-controllers from the time Moses descended from the mountain... (old servers and PU's are a great source for odd-shaped aluminium too..)
Silent, deadly..eh.. I mean.. it smokes só nicely now. And without that incessant, infernal rattling.

..All the more reason for raising useful threads such as this one, from the dead, necromancer The archives of this forum are more like the Greek Underworld; and all that's needed is a ouija board to summon up some useful ghoulsJay-Em wrote:Holy necro-threading.. How I hate photobucket! Just tried to pull the pics out but I can’t even access them!
I still have the Mk2 at home so I’ll take some photos and post them up later.

Nope, can only see the thumbnails and when I click on them I get the friendly ransom note!Son of a gun-ner wrote:Thank you so much. Sorry to be a pain.
Even though you can't retrieve the pictures from your account, can you see them? If you can, you could always take screen shots of them
Mick.
Anyway, here’s a few pics of the Mk2 fan mod. I removed the smoke pot from the tray it shares with the pump motor. Cut the heating element wires apx 2 inches out and cut off all of the pump piston chamber, filing it flat. I opened up the hole in the chamber up with a 10mm drill to allow more air flow. Then just superglued the 25mm 12V fan over this side making sure I didn’t cover or glue onto the top plate so it can still be opened. Finally I soldered both the positive wires from the fan and heating element to a plugged lead cut from the original smoke unit, and repeated that with the negative wires. No need for the square of PCB as it’s now a much smaller, neater unit.
Here’s a clip of it running.

Okay chaps,
I just have to ask.............
Wouldn't it be easier and faster to just buy an MK1 smoker?

I used to be indecisive. Now, I'm not sure..

Re: HL smoker pump replaced with a fan
I got my fans off of ebay for less than a dollar apiece. The smokers I had on hand. 10 minutes with a dremel tool and hot glue gun, Bob's your uncle!
So I'm guessing not cheaper, and pretty easy.

Ditto to that ^
It’s really not that hard once you know what you’re doing and takes up a lot less space in your tank.
