Bruder MAN 6X4 RC Conversion!

Post by Will01Capri »

So I have been building a few HL trucks recently and it has given me many ideas.
The chassis in the WPL & HL trucks are so simple I thought, yeah in can do that!
So with that idea I have been looking at other cabs I could use to make more vehicles.

Then saw a Bruder truck cheap and thought Yeah!

Last night I bought a lot of building materials and now I am.measuring it up.

This is gonna be a big build, but my.hope is this will be.my tank transporter once I get a trailer and modify it :)

Next step is to find some decent axles for the back. But the issue is finding something that is 170-190 2mm wide at the end of the threads. I want to stick with beam/bridge type axles and leaf springs.
I may end up having to cut crawler axle down!

Well, my "man" measures 180mm outside of the wheels. The original wheels bowl shaped with a rubber like plastic tyre fitted, even the back "pair" that appear double.
If you intend to use replacement wheels like I do, the axle housing will have to be shorter at the rear to accommodate double wheels, unless you go for single to compensate.

Mick.
Sorry bad memory. But stripped it down the other night.
80mm chassis rail outside width.
185mm outside of wheels.rear and 175mm outside front wheels.

I am thinking about turning my own alloy wheels and then cutting out the plastic bruder wheels and screwing intonalloy face. But try and use a 1/10 axle and make so the wheel can sit over the axle inside. I am looking for metal axle so I can then modify them.

Not sure on Tamiya width 1/14 trucks?
As for front I am either making my own or buying front axle and cutting in half and shortening.

Another option for rear is buy a rear gearbox case off rx car with multilink suspension and then adapting it to a beam axle and make my own half shafts and tubes. Again can be done, but need a suitable axle case.
Need to get.my vertical slide in lathe and some fillets so I can do some milling

Only just bought it, but arrived near enough next day. Bonus.

Agree on wheel at front. Still need to.figure that. But I think I may try slightly wider track and maybe slight flare arches. Makes rear axle choice easier.

As for rear arches I have found some Chinese options. But one in particular which I may be able to turn into something useable. But it is going to be an arse as a lot of machining.

I will buy one of.the axles for the Rat Rod. Then see if it can be machined narrower. Then i will buy a few for the conversion of this truck.
Need to.find a decent 5th wheel aswell. The bruder one is going on the Rat Rod.

Yeah. I haven't got measurements yet. But if no good I got 3mm plate aluminium I could double up and then machine.

Something not right on scale though with the Bruder truck.
If you calculate rear width in reality. What do you get?
That is not right.
I.dont believe 9.5ft wide.
I reckon the Bruder truck I have is closer to 1/14 scale! Makes RC stuff easier haha. I still not buying Tamiya axles though!

It gets worse however as i have just bought in a Mercedes 6 wheel Tractor & Trailer unit to convert as a tank hauler

Not sure, but i need to see if this is supposed to be 6wheel drive or another 6x4.
But i think i may beef it up and just change it into a 6x6 and grunt it up a bit so it can handle some offroad action.

Hi Will, if you look at my Diamond T you will see that I have used the WPL rear axle and created my own double hubs, and I don't think you would need to go wider than that, even the dragon wagon uses the same width rear axle as the Diamond T. The only issues you may have is that maybe the WPL rear axles aren't beefy enough to handle the load, in which case you can always opt for the metal versions, also you may have a problem with the front axle width, but when I checked the Diamond T I found that the front wheels sat at the centre of the pair of rear tyres (if that makes sense?)

Anyway have lots of fun with your builds.
