Puma Sd.Kfz. 234/2 Metal Origin 1:16 WIP

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

I haven't updated this WIP in a long time, I apologize ;)

90 minutes to turn in one direction, another 90 in the opposite direction. Slow as a sloth. Now it runs smooth and silky like a baby's butt:

Presentation of the sides:

We install the new half-shafts, all 8, the springs are mounted ....... feed a few volts and ....... gears that clench, threaded grains that jump, shafts that turn in vacuo. Very beautifull. Want to set it on fire: 100.

But calm is the virtue of the strong and after the initial dismay it is necessary to understand what happened. Let's investigate:

let's see what happens by removing the spring:

without the spring the problem is reduced. The word passes to the experts: two quick glances and the sentence arrives: the drive shafts are too long, they point.

how do they point? How can I shorten them? Let's start with an idea that is as crazy as it is unhealthy which, however, has the result:

Among other things, the paint we applied peels off, plastically horrible. It must be removed. The power of Chante Claire:

Image

Image

Let's throw Vallejo and go back to mom Tamiya:

Image

Image

Image

The subgroups are assembled:

Image

Image

Two problems emerged during testing:

- the bevel gears cannot stay in position with only the threaded dowel. This is fine for twisting, but under stress the gear tends to retreat on the shaft. It must be shimmed with washers and shims.

- the M2 x 2.5 threaded dowels are small and when they are screwed into the groove in the shaft it is more the part of the grain that is in the shaft than that which engages in the bevel gear. Too short. They must be longer.

If there are no big problems for washers and washers, M2 threaded dowels are, in Rome, impossible to find. In 10 days the precious material arrives from Germany

Determining the thickness value is a painstaking pharmacist's job but the day looks promising:

let's be brave and give power:

We move on to the second axle, the most difficult one, the one under the transmission:

at the end of the day we get to install the third axle. Everything works. Tomorrow we should conclude with the fourth and last axle.

Meanwhile the artist who paints the sketches for me has completed the work on the last two that I had brought to do:

Paint touch-ups

Dynamic testing:

Image

Once the plate has been installed (there are no problems) we move on to the tie rods:

Image

Image

Once the drive shafts have been installed, we can install the wheels:

Image

Image

Really hard:

The bodywork is mounted on the hull and it turns out that:

Image

Image

The turret rotation system interferes with the engine.

Image

Image

Image

Definitely cool. But let's move on. The default tires smell like fake for a mile:

Image

Definitely better after a good smoothing: lol !: we just have to do it for another 17 hips and while we have a nice painted rim it doesn't hurt: lol!

Image

Image

Now it's up to the layout: where goes what. It's not easy though:

Image

They are pretty intimate in here:

Image

But there is everything::

Image

At the same time we make friends with the control board:

Image

Image

Image

In short, a lot of meat to cook, hoping that nothing will burn.

In the meantime, we went shopping

......to be continued

At "Partite Officine" we do not miss anything:

Image

Defined the convergence for all axes .....

Image

Image

.....differentiated steering achieved

Image

It begins to be appreciated  :lol!:

Image

Once the drive shafts have been mounted, the steering gear is blocked, we can give current:

The first steps:

There is a lot of work to be done but we hope we have laid a good foundation!

Things don't always go well, sometimes they go even less well. Sometimes they go wrong.

But at the Patrie Officine we know how to get up. They can't keep us down. Let's go in order:

- paint touch-ups are carried out, servos and steering linkage are installed. It is all ready:

Image

Image

Image

All the accessories necessary for dynamic testing are installed:

Image

Image

Everything is fixed, we are ready to run it. First test: smooth floor, high speed, dynamic cornering behavior:

The model turns very well, the central axles do not slip, it seems that the steering delta has been centered.

We switch to off-road:

But let's move on to the third test: the inclined plane:

If the road test went very well the off-road is not for the Puma, the inclined plane is Caporetto.

After all, the tests are used to bring out the hidden defects. In summary:

1) the Puma is unsuitable for off-roading, it jumps. Attempting to use it in this sense is wrong and would not respect the use of the real medium.

2) the Elmod card does not manage the Puma current well. It can be seen in the start in the grass and even better on the inclined plane where with the accelerator applied the vehicle is unable to climb.

3) the transmission grains. There is at least one pair of bevel gears that jumps under stress.

4) the only convincing thing is the steering of the 8 wheels that do not make the vehicle skid when cornering.

Definitely a 3: 1 for the squirrel. There is a lot to do. Let's get to the point of the brain and take it apart:

Image

Image

When the wine becomes vinegar, all that remains is to throw it away .... and start all over again.

At Patrie Officine the term give up does not pass the door.

Determination, perseverance, find a way to. It almost becomes a curse. A way must be found. A friend tells me "..... but isn't it a pastime?" .....at the beginning. Now it is a challenge. A challenge that deserves.

Having to dismantle everything, the hull was repainted. We tend to do dark vehicles, so this trend also needs to be taken care of.

You order the material, you go back to your choices. We start all over again.

This time Xion deigns to answer: I order 4 crowns and 6 pinions, 4 jumpers that hold the pinions still (the first mutilated for the bevel gears, new ones are needed):

Image

Installation is crucial. The chainrings must mate with the sprockets in the correct manner.

Crowns can move on their axes, a tenth too far ahead causes disasters.

It takes. A whole day to position the gears correctly, everything works as it should, smooth as the skin of a Swede ..... then you spend two days installing shims.

It takes watchmaker's fingers for shims with an internal diameter of 3 mm and an external diameter of 5.

When you reassemble everything, the gears scratch like the indents of a ninety-year-old.

Unzip everything and start over.

Eventually you come out of it but patience is key.

I decide to go through the inclined plane test first. In order not to have problems with the board I will power the motor with a laboratory power supply. We just have to give the current:

Image

Now you have to think about the next step: the installation of the card and an ESC dedicated to engine management. Let's enjoy the result, the slope is impressive .......

Rain-soaked ground, tall, wet grass, the worst conditions. We can't complain:

Let's try to overcome an obstacle that the real vehicle could not really overcome:

Mettendo le ruote oblique l'operazione riesce (scendere dalla parte opposta costerà la rottura del supporto della ruota di scorta)

By putting the wheels at an angle, the operation is successful (going down from the opposite side will cost the breakage of the spare wheel holder)

Let's go back indoors, on the inclined plane: the squirrel not only climbs without problems, but once stopped uphill it starts again without hesitation:

If it's not 45 degrees ..... it's at least 40

Enthusiastic about the testing, we cheered the spirit with one of the most rewarding activities: structural work: lol !: after having restored the hull cover and virgin turret, the Dutch masterpieces can be seen:

Image

Image

Congratulations on the hinges ....... We remove the standard accessories ....... Those Phillips screws will have a short life

Image

In front of the columns there are ...

Image

But behind?!?

Image

Image

In order not to waste time, we prepare the battery for final installation:

Image

They look like two explosive sticks ..... but they fit perfectly:

Image

That's it for now, see you soon

Great work and perseverance to get it running  Metal origins made some nice pieces but they are let down by the quality of the build and how badly they run as standard. I had the same problems with the gears of my sdkfz 222 but I overcame it by using some aftermarket parts, these vehicles can be a lot of work but they are worth it in the end

Cheers, Lee.

One of the doubts I had about the Puma is the rotation unit. The present one is incompatible with the new release transmission. Xion in the guise of good Thomas sends me the modified version. It'll be fine? Or else the installation of the transmission will be overturned .. ..with all that follows on the results achieved. We just have to mount the material just arrived.

the kit does not install ...... A hole is missing:

Image

Oh well we don't get scared. We deliver, assemble and .... it doesn't work. Let's see':

Image

Image

It definitely can't work ... Let's go down from here, expand over there and voilà:

We mount the unit on the cover in the hull, we feed with the electric bench:

The result is obtained with a micrometric calibration of the fixing screws. The positioning of the unit must also be done exactly as indicated in the instructions otherwise it will not mesh. The instructions can be improved but in the end it works!:

Image

Image

The engine interferes with a battery, the package must be opened and modified ....

Image
Ma l'importante è che tutto fila :

We then move on to improve the closure of the muzzle:

Image

Image

Image

Still to be finished but here we are, the nose is the first thing you see on the vehicle and it must be perfect. At the same time we rebuild the spare wheel holder. In plastic it is fine for a static, but for a dynamic it takes much more. At the third attempt we hit the result:

Image

That is all for the moment. Regards

Nice one , brass is always better for scale brackets etc, as plastic or styrene is usually far to thick. :haha:
