New project Matilda 3/4

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

Yes good point well made. Any gearbox should be fitted so it can be removed, serviced, and replaced. I expect these gears to function pretty well because the Matilda is a very light tank, being 3d printed. In fact this is the reason for using a lightweight gearbox as the suspension will not support the standard metal gearboxes available and the weight needs to be spread forwards to enable the tank to run properly.

I ordered a couple of geared motors from Amazon but they were small and puny and were sent back. I then remembered I had a couple of motors from the Universal Carrier build and decided to use them.

I redesigned the gearbox to carry the motor, got a coupling from Amazon, and here's the result

It brings the motor weight nearer the centre of the tank so the suspension should handle it. Some slight adjustment of the gears is required but that should be job done

Hi yes it would work in any small light tank. If anyone has a printer and would like the print files they can pm me and I can provide details of the required hardware (bearings, motor, bevel gears).

I'm not sure about the motors, I may have to change them for a slower/faster speed geared units, but I will only be able to test that when the tank is running. At least I can now progress the tank suspension.
