Saratov StuG III

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

Saratov StuG III

Post by jimbo_wa »

As a first build I thought that a StuG III would be 'easier' - it's small-ish for a 1/16th tank, there's many originals to choose from to base the build on and I like the look of it!

The Internet is a wonderful thing and whilst browsing, I came across a shaky video of a Russian bog find outside Saratov in the early '00's of a StuG III Ausf.G with Ostketten tracks and winter whitewash. Having dug a liitle further into the story and not finding another build, I decided that it would be fitting to try and replicate the recovered StuG in memory of the crew.

Parts were ordered from Forgebear and I've managed to get it running under its own steam over the weekend.

Image

I first replaced all the cross head screws with proper steel hex heads that I already had from previous R/C escapades

Image

Then created a Styrene base that made use of all the space in the chassis!

Image

And then feckled a speaker box for a Monacor SPX-21M 2" Full Range Hifi Loudspeaker and the rest of the electronics.

Image

The Open Panzer board fits fine and was a breeze to configure.

At least the gearboxes still fit.

More pictures to follow tomorrow of the rest of the electrics...

Thanks c.rainford73, it's a bit of a steep learning curve once I get past the soldering!

Managed to get the ESC's and motors soldered up and I may have to reassess using 3S LiPo as it's a bit swift off the mark...

Love the Open Panzer inertia and momentum settings, my skirting boards are getting a right work out. ImageImage

They’re Hobbywing Quicrun 1080’s - total overkill, but quality bits of kit.

Have now 'downgraded' to 2S LiPo power (6000mAh) so it's a bit less swift, but not by much...

A few more pretty pictures and a quick video...

This thing is running like a breeze. Very nice. Is this most likely due to the electronics and the two individual speed controllers? The ibu always felt a bit awkward in that department.

Thanks Soeren, I really don't know as this is my first foray into tanking, but I am really happy with the slow speed control. It's a pretty heavy lump (over 3kg for the loaded lower).

It is probably a combination of the decent ESC's and Open Panzer settings - I'm still trying different combinations in the settings!
