So with the Centurion finished, I managed some work on the Maultier

The suspension is progressing and I managed to make it a reasonable size to fit


Managed to make some hub inner and outer pieces so the wheel will fit onto the WPL front axle

The Gremlins strike!!!

Just when I thought everything was going so well and I was making great progress, then I get a quick message from Mike in Hawaii to say 'erm I think your front axle may be too wide' and on checking it was very much too wide.

Anyhoo I thought well the front axle isn't driven so I'll just make a new front axle and got started, and them I realised that if the front axle was too wide, what about the back axle.

DOOM. The back axle was about 30mm too wide.

At this pount I was tempted to go and kick something, and then had a McGiver moment. I had just discarded the front axle casing and shaft, which was about 20mm narrower. To cut a long story short I transferred the hex parts from the rear drive shaft to the front drive shaft and found I could use the front axle housing for the rear axle, what a relief!

Here's the pic of the modified front axle and the start of the modified rear axle. It's a bodge in the best engineering traditions but it should work. The result is that the tracks will hopefully be no more than 8mm too wide each side which should look ok.



I can't even go and have a celebratory malt whisky as we are having a no-alcohol January, but boy if ever there was a time when I could use one it's now!

So I designed and printed the brake drums and they fit nicely - this is with the axle inserted



Then fitted them to the axle


Despite using the narrower axle there was still a 10mm overlap each side, hmmmm, after careful consideration I trimmed 4mm off the end of the hex shaft and tried again


Much better, the overlap is now down to 6mm each side which I think probably won't be noticed. I've ordered some metal pieces to make the axle sturdy enough to carry the torque caused by the tracks, together with a metal prop shaft, so if I can get this lot together, it should be sturdy enough to do the trick and stand up to being run around the yard!
