Chieftain Mk V scratch build

Post by midlife306 »

Awesome work Alwyn
Did you buy a length of spring & cut to the desired length?
Edit: oh, carbon steel or stainless?
Cheers

Beautiful work on those bogies, Alwyn. I love prototypical suspension on the models, it feels like the lazy way out when you see all these models with simple clock springs.

With regards to the off-scale return rollers (which I must admit I did not notice until you pointed them out), could you trim a few millimetres off the track centreguides?

Hi folks, thanks for the good words, I thought about trimming the track centre guides but I don't want the tracks jumping off, I may reconsider later and print smaller return rollers though, I can always do that as an upgrade.

Wayne I bought a 400mm length of carbon steel spring and cut to 40mm lengths. I may need to cut slightly longer lengths once the tank is up to full weight but again I can do that later as the suspension is bolted together.

Otherwise it's all now down to printing the rest of the wheels/rollers, assembling them, and getting the gearboxes.

Thanks Tom, unfortunately I can't lay claim to any magical powers, it's all down to blood, sweat, and anglo-saxon swear words! :haha: :silent:

I had to modify the code for the spring mountings for the suspension
The springs were a different diameter to the original plan.

Well that's one side done apart from the gearboxes

Lot's more printing and assembling to do. You know things would be so much easier if Heng Long would just do a Chieftain or Centurion...... but then I suppose we wouldn't have as much fun  8O :D

Hi Alwyn, slowly but surely I'm picking things up as I go along, I actually managed to work out which line controlled the bore on the spring seat & reduced the rad by a mill, why... because I could, thanks for the masterclass

That's great Wayne, getting forum members familiar with openscad is one of the reasons I post the code. The best way of learning is to open the code in Openscad and alter it, and see what effect the changes have.

Havre fun
