SdKfz 164 Nashorn by Alwyn Turner

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

Hi,
I noticed it after my build but the best solution now is definitely the FU5 on shapeways.com

You get the whole radio arrangement; transmitter, receiver, power supply...

And today is 10% off with free shipping.

Whilst waiting for the bits for the chassis to arrive, I have been doing a little work on the ammunition and storage boxes. A couple of questions arise. What were the doors of the ammo storage have been made of, and similarly what where the actual ammo racks made from? I want to get colours as good as possible.

Hi Richard, here's a pic of the real thing (I did a lot of research to design the stuff so hope this helps)

Looking at the pics I think both the doors and shelves would have been steel, also because of the weight of the shells.

Best regards

Hi Richard, one thing I forgot to mention is that the racks are not glued in to the cupboards, specifically to help with painting. You can gently slide the shelves out of the cupboards, they are just a tight push fit.

Thanks Alwyn. I had already discovered that. I have a tendency to explore things to see what comes apart. Most times I can get them back together. :/

I shall now display my high level of ignorance. Not wanting to break anything by using unnecessary brute force, how do I remove the existing idlers, please?

Hi Richard, if you insert a small phillips screwdriver though the hole in the centre of the idler, the screw will be very stiff but with firm grip you should be able to unscrew it. I've just done that on the other chassis here and it works.

Things are starting to progress, albeit, very slowly. The upper hull has its red oxide primer now.

As I said earlier, I have been working on the ammunition lockers. I figured that with the repetitive opening and closing of the folding doors, plus loading and removing the shells, that the paintwork would get a bit of a hammering. I've not really tried any serious paint chipping so this is my first attempt. I shall be interested to hear whether the consensus is that I've overdone it or not. I shall take that on board before I attack the other locker.
