Hobby Engine Abrams Conversion

Post by Tankbear »

Well it started out as buying a non runner tank.

After some fiddling about I couldn't get the tank to work at all so ripped out the electronics

Image

Fitted a Clark TK20 I borrowed from my ZTZ99 tank which is currently in bits

Image

Drilled out the machine gun and added a 3mm red LED

Image

Image

Also changed the red headlights to amber ones.

Image

The original turret turn is slow, so tried swapping with a faster motor and still slow. So ripped it out and fitted a HL turret turn and removed the turn limiter so now is quicker (12 seconds full turn) and fully 360 degree.

Image

Next back onto the lower hull and drive gear. Going to try the ZTZ99 tracks and drive sprockets, but the gap in the wheels is too large and needed closing up.

I cut a load of plasticard to 5mm strips and wrapped them around each side to fill them in.

Image

I then put some rubber (bike inner tube) over it all. And some filing away pinch points.

Tracks fitted to idle wheel

Then onto the gearbox end. Used the battery compartment lid as a base

Image

Cut some plasticard

Image

Also cut the corner off the HL gearboxes

Image

So it wouldn't get in the way of the suspension arm

Image

Gearbox fitted

Image

Removed 3 track links to get this

Image

Finished other side

Now i've only made the idle wheel gap smaller non of the road wheels but took it for a test drive on the grass, and surprisingly the tracks didn't come off.

Next is to add servo recoil, LED flash and hidden battle unit.

No this is a different one. I got three none runners off ebay planned to get two working for public have a goes at events and meets and third I do up and this is the third one.

It was clear at the YWE show that the existing ones with rubber tracks are useless on grass as always come off and tank can't turn that well. So I was suprised how much better swapping to the plastic ZTZ99 tracks made it.

Quick update.

I found the servo recoil not working to well, generally a bit sticky and juddery action. Also it was fouling the inner turret top and bottom when using the elevation. So I stripped out the servo fixed the wires down with some hot glue and relocated the servo which now gives the barrel further travel.

Image

Also found the flash LED had stopped working so had to change that as well.

So all is good now. Will try do a video of it all running and upload.

Good Morning.
Continually amazing work here. I too noted the issues caused by the barrel recoil unit way back on the first M1A1 from HE. Elegant fix there. I've been searching for a source for a new pair of those stock rubber tracks for my old Abrams and note that you might have some lying around. If so, I would gladly _purchase_ a set from you. If interested, please email me at painlesswolf@yahoo.com with price wanted and shipping costs.
Thank you,

Done some more work.

Moved the on/off switch and volume control to the back for easy access.

Image

Also went to the trouble of upgrading the volume wiring to 22AWG servo wire and the main power to something larger ;)

Image

Video testing of the functions.

Video of test drive on grass.
