Heng Long Sherman Firefly

Post by SherFly1940 »

Mornin' Chaps! I've set sights on a new project I want to do. Saving up to purchase a Heng Long Sherman and 3D print some parts for it. Here are some stickers if you need them:

Hello young man.
Are you saying you're offering these for sale?
Or is this a master for us to copy and print?

Oh, forgot to mention that. Thanks for asking, they don't need to be bought, just copy them. Although, if you do need me to photoshop any stickers for a project I'd be happy to help you, fellow comrades.

I do believe this is all I'll be adding to the Firefly, but I can design more for more intricate builders. For now the link to this on thingiverse at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4228269. If you need the scale, it's already at 1/16 and the .zip file is attached below. So far you guys have been helpful already, but I won't be starting until July, because I was too careless to have money saved up.

I have found that most Sherman fireflies have the covered machine gun port up by the boxy shape (Like this: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/15/98/31/1598 ... 75fb59.jpg), but some have it farther down (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File ... n_2014.JPG). Is this because of different models, like the M4A4 having different gun ports or is it a British thing (IC - VC)?

My understanding is that on the Firefly the bow machine gunners position and equipment was deleted to facilitate the stowage of ammunition stored in a vertical position. As the ammunition was considered long case at 33” for a 17 pounder gun there was not sufficient room to store total requirement of rounds in the turret and main fighting compartment, so 15 rounds were stored in the deleted position once occupied by the bow gunner. Mind you, these rounds could not be transferred during combat conditions as they had to be passed vertically up through the hatch once used by the bow machine gunner and passed by hand down into the the loaders hatch . The quadrangle plug was welded over the machine gun aperture by the British after conversion from the USA spec M4A4 (I think !) ;)

The plug is in the same place in both pictures, they just look different because the Bovington example does not have the additional add-on armour plate over the drivers hoods that the other has.

I'd recommend spending a few days on this site to learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Sherman: http://the.shadock.free.fr/sherman_minutia/

So would I, I love that site
I believe there are at least two different shapes for that bow gunners "plug."
