The hatch is made functional. Notice the layered plasticard structure on how it was made. The hatch was then shaped with a nail file.

I am still wondering if i will give it servo rotation. As it was manually rotated by the commander, i am guessing it must be real slow.

Thank you Herman for your constant interest and encouragements.

Continuing with the detailing of the upper decks.

Contrary to other M113, the motor on the Lynx is installed at the back. The two air intakes grills are equipped with a folding metal protection that can be raised. They likely helps kept water and dust away when required.

The periscope guards were made in 3mm x 0.5mm thick brass strips. The issue here is that 2mm brass strips seemed too thin and the 3mm strip are too large. Well, that will have to do. They look good.

In preparation for the design of the Browning M2 mount and elevation, i gave the turret its rotation system. As the Lynx has a manually operated turret, i wanted something with very slow traverse.

A plasticard spacer was created under the turret to accept a medium size Vex Robotics gear that fits the hull size. It has a easy process with a single M3 hex bolt to install and remove the turret for maintenance.
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
As the main gear wheel is small, i cannot put on a HL rotation unit directly on it, rotation would be too fast. I created some reduction gears using a small and very small Vex Robotics gears, installed and glued on top of each other with a main axle.
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
This shows the two level upper deck and how i am making use of the available spare to create a rotation system. The elevation servo will be installed on top of the main gear. Now you understand why the thin spacer for the main gear was created.

RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
A regular Heng Long rotation unit is installed.

Here we have a very slow turret rotation system designed on the fly. It makes the noise of a motorized rotation system instead of a manually operated system, but its what i can do with the Clark control board used.

Hi,

The following posts are for the machine gun mount and Browning M2.

The M26 cupola is equipped with an 12.7mm M2 Browning manually operated by the commander. It can be fired from inside. At first sight, the mount seems complicated, and it is actually worse than it looks. This machine gun mount was more work than the whole Churchill turret on the previous build. But it is one of the highlight of the build so i had to do a good job. Forget about 3D printing this.
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
Some other views of the real thing, enough to demoralize even the most experimented scratch builder. The mount is composed of a base connected to the cupola at 4 points with a platform for the machine gun that elevates. The feeding mechanism for the M2 can be on the left or right. I do not understand why that is the case, i picked the ammo box on the left side as this is how the Tamiya M2 is setup. Various pictures show the ammo box on both sides for no obvious benefits one way or another.

I have not found the purpose of the large ring on the right side. I am guessing is it part of an additional AA sighting apparatus that is not installed here. There is a one large spring that can obviously be switched sides as the mounts are also on the left side.

Need to start with what makes sense, the two mounts on the cupola. A modest start here that leads to a completed gun mount designed in a telescopic fashion, one item at a time. It took about 3 days, quite a few hours here and there.
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
The mounts were given supports in thick brass strips for solidity. These would not last 10 seconds in the field if they were made in other material.
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
The platform for the machine gun is started in the same fashion. The 1/35 kit was not too useful for details, too simplified, but helped for dimensions. I had to rely on pictures from available walk arounds for all the detailing.

The gun mount is almost completed, minus the small sights that are too fragile to install at this time. I am also finding new stuff to add on the mount all the time, so it will be further improved.

As the Aber barrel is solid brass, i cut the thin section for replacement by a thick wall brass tube of the same size. As for the remaining section, it is drilled in order to install a fiber optic cable. Notice where the micro bit exits, this is calculated in order to orient the fibre towards the embedded LED inside the machine gun.

A new barrel is created in brass tubes of 3 overlapping sizes, and will be connected to the larger ABER section. The barrel was shaped with a nail file and then polished.

RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
This is the new barrel ready for mounting on the Tamiya M2 body. The connection between the two barrel sections was done with superglue mixed with brass dust.
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
RC 1/16 M113 Lynx Command and Recon tank - build
The LED is installed inside the Tamiya main body, and the fiber optic cable is connected to the LED. A small hole was created in the LED plastic without touching the LED element. The LED wires exit from the bottom of the machine gun. Everything is thoroughly tested before sealing the Tamiya M2 body.

And here we have a fully enclosed, LED armed Tamiya/Aber M2 Browning machine gun.
