Hello All

I had hoped to do some more work on the turret but a batch of needed 3D printed parts have have not arrived as expected. I need to these particular parts, the turret bar armour, to enable me to correctly fix the left and right armour modules to original turret.

While waiting for the parts to arrive I have been looking at the layout of the electronics in the hull.

The two largest elements will be the speaker and 12volt LiPo battery, so I thought I would get then test fitted. Even with the huge amount of space in the hull, I want to make totally sure everything will fit neatly.

I am using a Visaton FR 10 for sound. This is quite a large driver and needs a speaker box to make the most of it. So, I thought I would start by making the speaker box.

For the housing I have used a plastic project box from a local electronics shop.

Step one was to cut a hole for the driver.

To optimise sound quality, the speaker box needs a bass port. I couldn't find any useful information on how big the port should be in relation to the driver, so I have taken a guess. I have used a piece scrap 25mm electrical conduit. This looks about right....

The plastic box needed some dampening material and I have used some felted material held in place with double sided adhesive tape.

With speaker box finished, I could plan the layout of the major electronic components in the hull.

I had previously built a replacement smoke generator and this fits neatly between the drive motors.

With any luck the bar armour should arrive from the 3D printer in the few days and I can get back to working on the the turret.

Hello All,

The printed parts to complete the main structures of the turret arrived. The following images show the rough dry fit of the parts. Fortunately, everything seems to okay from a fit perspective. Doubtless there will be some sanding and filling but it looks like there are no major problems.

Howdy,
I have got all the parts together to continue work on the turret.
I wasn't totally happy with the first batch of 3d printed bar armour. Comparing the pieces to my reference photos, they appeared slightly over scale.
I reduced the the thickness of the slats by 0.5mm, removed the pieces used to fix the armour to the turret and resized some of the pieces for a better final fit.

I have also printed the the bar armour sections for the rear of the hull.

I will be using brass photo etch parts to fit and hold the bar to the turret and to the hull (when I get to that stage). I will also be using photo etch parts for the detail work, in particular the tool clamps on the engine deck.
This fret is 0.7m brass and mainly comprises the brackets used to hold the bar armour and the crew access ladders that form part of the hull rear bar armour.
Because of the size of the fret itself, I engaged a specialist Chinese company to produce the piece. The artwork was originally drawn in MS Visio and finalised by my 15 year old son in Adobe Photoshop .

These two frets comprise the detail for the turret stowage baskets, engine fans and and engine deck tool clasps.
The first fret was designed from scratch and is my first attempt at photo etch part making.
The detail parts by and large are relatively complex in terms of folds and shapes and currently beyond what I felt I could reasonably design. The team at ETModels in Shanghai were kind enough to custom design the frets for me using parts from their existing 1:35 product portfolio. I have worked with ETModels previously on a yet-to-be-built 1:16 T-90MS and I have found them to to very helpful and accommodating. Some patience is needed - they are a busy business - but the end result has always been superb!

Making great progress Inger, some very neat work organising the internals and add-on armour. Really interesting to see the custom PE, it's not something I'd ever considered before!

Hello, some more progress but slower than hoped!

Originally, I had planned to 3D print the bar armour and mountings as single integrated pieces. However, as mentioned in a earlier post these pieces seemed out of scale and I reprinted the bar armour with thinner slats and without the mountings. The plan now is use separate mounting pieces made from photo etched brass.

The turret side bar armour is attached in two places: to turret basket and to spaced armour. The next thing to do was make the turret baskets so that bar mounting could be attached.
Turret basket.JPG

Turret Basket Assembly.JPG

Up to now, I had only temporally fitted the spaced armour to original turret to test fit and I had been holding everything in place with tape. Now it was time fix everything in place with two part epoxy. Once that was done, I could start dry fitting the baskets and bar armour.
Bar Armour Fitting.JPG
Bar Armour Fitting.JPG (42.23 KiB) Viewed 1568 times
Final fitting needs a little more planning before I move on. There are four square mountings that hold the rear bar armour in place and I need to measure and cut these so that the are correct length and rear bars meet the the side bars correctly.

While I was dry fitting the baskets another small complication cropped up. There is sheet of the Saab Barracuda Mobile Camouflage System that is fitted behind the basket. I need work out if I fix this in place now or slip the camouflage sheet behind the basket after the basket is permanently attached.

I also realised that before I permanently fix the bar armour I need to make sure it is all positioned at the correct height so that it clears all the raised parts of the engine deck and upper hull when the turret is traversing.

So, some more assembly planning and thought needed before moving on.

High quality build going on here, nice! Given the effort you've made to produce a ported speaker box, had you considered the acoustics it will be playing into? The cone is flush with the top of the hull which places it just a few mm from the hull deck just below the rear of the turret ring. Maybe it would be better able to deliver the sound you are after if it were inclined rearwards into the motor/gearbox area which would provide a further chamber and engine vents (sound vents) to outside the hull. It should make the sound less muffled. Sorry, audio engineer in one of my former lives so l may get a bit anal at times! :/

Hi, thanks for taking the time to look through the blog and making some very useful comments. I haven't fixed any electronics in place so there is still plenty of scope to move things around. Because of size if the model, there is quite a bit room. There is also a lot space between the top of the speaker and upper hull - about 4cm. At the moment, I am thinking that I will position the speaker under the turret the theory being the turret would act as a sound chamber. I haven't bench tested the electronics and sound yet, so plenty of time (and space) to get the best results. Thanks again for your positive comments. Your ideas and expertise are most welcome!
