Thank you Jimster,

This post is for the gunner's cupola machine gun and mount.

The Canadians replaced the German MG3 with the Belgian FN MAG and it is known as the C6.

As seen below on PrimePortal on a regular Leopard C2 in the early 2000, just a look at the machine gun mount for the FN MAG C6 machine gun is enough to create great discouragement into someone's mind regarding the ability to recreate it.

With the few number of hours i was willing to spend on it, some simplification is obviously required.

This is how the C6 fits on the mount. There are variations of C6 with two back handles (M2 Browning style) but i selected the version with buttstock and pistol grip as they are readily available on the SOL model kit.

As seen in Afghanistan, looks like the holder for the ammo box was replaced by a simplified larger box, i am guessing it is a .50 ammo box size permanently attached to the mount. Notice how the ammo is extracted from the box from a raised lid on the top cover.

In terms of structure and how to attack its construction, the MENG 1/35 kit provides some info but it is also much simplified. Below is the C6.

The core elements for the mount are done with a mixture of brass tubes and plasticard.

Someone could spend a week on this but i am satisfied with the results of about 5 hours of work with this rendition of the C6 and its gun mount for the Leopard. It has been made removable.

The experts on the Leopard C2 will surely notice quite a few simplifications and mistakes, but i think it is not too bad considering the level of complexity involved and the time it took to make this.

Hi Louis,

Excellent work on the MG and Mount. I wonder why the Ammo Box is at such an acute angle to the receiver? The one on my Abrams is at an angle because the Armored Shield forces it to be angled but not nearly that acute.

Hi Barry, i do not see a technical reason for it. Maybe it is positioned to better protect the gunner when shooting the machine gun, providing a better shield around the left shoulders and head than if is was strait. It’s also probably easier to reload the ammo box because it is closer. Just guessing.

I am continuing to go around the model and adding details based on what i see. The C2 Mexas is lacking a good walk around website or book with close ups. The C2 Mexas has 3 Jerrycans at the back of the turret, mix of Water and Fuel/lubricant.

The Shapeways Jerrycan holder saved me a couple of hours of scratch building, i will take them, a rare luxury. They are not perfect but look close enough to the originals on the C2.

Thankfully, the SOL Models Jerrycans fit strait in, a design assumption that could have been wrong. I selected 2 Water and 1 fuel.

The Shapeways radio mount was modified to look like the one on the pictures. It was surprisingly easy to create the guard for the GPS mount, using the base of a spring and 3 small brass rods section. But it is real small and with superglue involved, building it can get messy real fast. With the 2 pictures side by side, I am noticing that i need to add a cover to the GPS mount to fit the size.

The brass antenna goes right through the shapeways mount to reach the turret resin base for solidity. The antenna is thinner than normal in order to drill through and protect the 3D printed base from disintegrating.

The antenna were created at half length, about 10cm long. These super big antennas should be 21 centimeter high on the turret, a real danger for the eyes when picking up the tank and they would always be in the way, when not broken. I could have shown them bended down and held in place with strings but it would have been complicated and fragile. I decided to cut them shorter, better be safe than sorry.

I’m amazed at how easy you seem to make everything look. Your results are always very good. It reminds me a landscape artist, Bob Ross, who had a weekly tv show and he showed you how to paint a landscape in 30 minutes. No way! If you’re familiar at all with that old show you know what I mean.

Thanks Jimster ! its probably 48 years of modelling experience that help a bit. But i must admit that making a bunch of Ludwig kits in the past 4 years has really improved my skills, while they remained mostly the same whole decades i was building plastic kits.

This post is the final one for the tracks. Thank god, i managed to finish them. You can't imagine the patience it takes.

The real Leopard 1 tracks have rubber pads that become quite worn out in operation.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
The rubber pads are attached to the tracks using a thick rubber section that goes all the way through slots in the metal.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
Creating two tracks of 86 links each means that the stupid buyer of AFV-Model Leopard 1 tracks, like me, has to assemble a total of 1,548 parts, yes 1,548. So, for the guys who complain about the number of plastic parts in a 1/35 tracks, you have seen nothing. All the metal and rubber parts need clean up, most are moving parts and assembly requires all kind of unorthodox and heavy handed methods to put them together.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
AFV-Model has correctly reproduced the real aspect of the Diehl Typ D640A tracks with the hole for the rubber pads, a feature that is not provided on the tracks that Manheader is selling on eBay. But it comes at a price and every parts and every surfaces with casting need to be smoothed with a hand metal file, a long process.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
10 hours of work is required for the metal part clean up and assembly. There are very few spares so none can go to waste. If there are casting problems, they have to be dealt with.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
The result is impressive but they are bright silver, so some kind of weathering is required before putting on the rubber pads. Paint won't last 5 minutes on these and there is no way to apply paint on all surfaces between the links.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
I read that vinegar on zinc can produce a worn texture as the acid eats a bit of the metal. I was really surprised to see a worn look and color coming out 10 minutes only after having brushed a few teaspoons of vinegar on them. No wonder i can't eat that stuff anymore.

View of a rubber pad. For sure, this is more solid than if the rubber pad was just a flat tile glued over metal.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
Adding the rubber pads took at least another 10 hours of work...if not more. The Pads are not perfect, some have molding issues, bulged, air bubbles, and they are all a bit oversized and do not fall in place. That would have been too simple. The lips on the flat surface have a natural tendency to pop out of their metal sockets. Which means the thick body part has to be forced in the hole on each track, and then the lips raised, superglue applied and then the lips are folded in their sockets using a blade as a tool. It took me a few minutes to develop a standard process. There are no spare rubber pads, a bad situation that forced me to use the earlier rejects. This is a view of the underside of the track.
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
RC 1/16 Canadian tank Leopard C2 Mexas - Afghanistan - build
Actually, the track kit was missing 4 rubber pads so i had to make them myself using rubber holders residue they came attached to. I was not happy. Good thing i did not throw away the residues too fast. AFV-model should have provided at least 10 to 20 spares for all parts. I barely have a couple of pins and metal pads left, and no rubber pads.

Once the assembly is finished, the rubber pads need to be sanded with a nail file to flatten them, equalize their aspect, remove any bulging, and to give them a worn look. Finally, the tracks are done. Overall, it took between 22 and 25 hours of work, i can't figure out anymore as i worked on them an hour here and there. Some kind of excitement about mounting them on the tank overwhelms me at this point after so much effort and patience. I managed to keep my sanity during the building and finish them.

The rough aspect of the rubber pads is good. It would be totally unrealistic if they were sleek, clean and perfect. They compare well to the real thing. Here are views at various angles.

The grip that the pads have on the surface is impressive. These are long and heavy tracks. That will surely create lots of pressures on the suspension, idler, sprockets, gearbox and motors.

I think the worn out look of the pads compares well to the pictures of the real track at the top of the previous post. They will also naturally worn out more as the tank is played with.

Now that the tracks are done, next step is to install the electronics and perform running test of the motors, tracks and weapon system. It is really bad that Tamiya provided Sherman HVSS tracks with the Leopard 1A4 kit. It was a lot of work and extra expense to have accurate tracks. But i have now a set of spare Tamiya Sherman tracks... i already have a planned use for them.

Hi,

I took the opportunity of a quiet, sunny, late saturday afternoon with no wind to do the bolt job on the mantlet and glacis.

The Leopard C2 Mexas Glacis, frontal armor and mantlet are covered with small bolt heads in very specific patterns.

Thankfully, the Meng kit provided precise indications for all areas, much better than trying to figure these out from pictures, and it beats any instructions. It is important to have light of day because these are very difficult to see and make out.

As the bolts are aligned, it is important to draw some lines and follow them precisely, otherwise the results would be terrible.

It took about 3 hours of work. Meng SPS-005 with 0.8mm bolt heads were used. These are real small and need two pair of glasses on top of each other to see clearly. They must be removed from the sprue with a new blade for a clean and sharp cut. Once cut from the sprue and resting on top of a white plastic sheet to be visible, the methods to apply them is to pick one up lightly with the tip of a new blade, soak the bottom of the nut in superglue, remove excess glue by grazing against some paper, place nut where it should be and hold in place for about 2-3 seconds before removing blade tip from the nut head. Expect some kind of issue followed by some cursing on about 25% of them (flipping in air, does not hold, etc). There are a couple of hundreds bolt heads to put on, i did not count how many. Once this is started, there is no way back.
