Chieftain Mk V scratch build

Post by AlwynTurner »

In between my other projects I've started on the Chieftain scratch build.

Blueprint (off a mk1.5 - best blueprint I could find)

Started on the horstman suspension - pic of the 1/35 version I am using for dimensions/scaling

Here's my design so far

I will be doing the running wheel, sprocket, idler and return roller designs in due course but the KV1 tracks are what I will be using. They will need very slight trimming of the edges (about 2mm per side) so the dremmel will be busy, but they actually look a good match. The kv1 sprocket is too big so I will have to design a sprocket with 12 teeth rather than the 16 on the KV1. Lots to keep me busy but I'll publish the designs for you printer folk out there.

As a fairly recent newcomer to this forum I continue to be amazed at your 3D crafting & printing prowess. I have a 3D printer in my sights for my birthday later this year & have started playing with OpenSCAD in anticipation.

I would love to have a go at a Chieftain should you make the full design available.

Good to see someone else doing one, it looks like the only way to get one is to build it yourself. I can't help thinking that if HL/Taigen etc had done a Chieftain they would have sold a lot more of those than the Chally. Such is life??? :|

I think the Centurion and Chieftain have far more 'character' than the Challenger & Abrams. I remember my first military toys were a Dinky Antar & Centurion......

Alwyn, great to see another british Tank scratch build!

Here you see my Horstmann bogies; I used the Ferdinand tracks and drive sprockets:

they fit perfect...

Hi Freddy, where did you get the tracks and sprockets from please?

Just seen them on Chris's site, but 180 euro for tracks and sprockets !!! I think I'll use KV1 tracks and design and print my sprockets as otherwise my better half will divorce me.....
