From what I remember (and I managed to find confirmation on the Internet), a new special armor appeared in 2010, marked with the letter M (I suppose from the word M - Modernized) instead of the letter U (depleted uranium). New armor has appeared in:
M1a1 SA (Special Armor), M1a2 Sep v2, and in M1a2 Sep V3.
You must pay attention when building the SEP V3 versions that the shape of the turret and its size have changed - it has been extended forward. Currently, the turret armor is in line with the gun mantlet (which has not been modernized) ...

To make it more interesting, there are also export versions of the M1a1 and M1a2 with special armor developed for export. They have a letter designation on the turret after the serial number:
E - Arab countries (including Egypt - Abrams license, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Morocco) - all with export version of special armor)
A - Australia (the Australian government did not want depleted uranium due to protests by nature defenders - so the US developed an armor equivalent with the same parameters from other materials for them ).

You're welcome.
Yes. Only the turret has a number with the letter and, if I remember correctly, on the right side only... Good luck with your build.
P.s. Let me know if you will need 1/16 scale US MRE Box for your stowage ;)

Trying to figure out how best to replicate the wire welded numbers.

I have several different sets of plastic as well as PE number & letter sets for those that are cast.

Looks very good

A little explanation and supplement for future followers of this thread:

M1A2 SEP v2 was equipped with special armor HAP 3rd generation (Heavy Armor Package) = depleted uranium = letter U on armor, or in NGAP 1st generation (New Generation Armor Package) = modernized armor = letter M on armor.

In M1A2 SEP v3 (and SEP v4) there is only NGAP 2nd gen, so only with the letter M on the armor. That's all I was able to establish - which doesn't mean that I can't be wrong (but it makes sense).
As far as I know (and you've already written about it), the lower hull has no armor markings - only serial no.
