I used this, picked up at local arts & craft store. It's made in China so possibly available at one of your local arts & craft stores.

Barry is in the US so I would say it is available in the US. He bought the copper kind so he could solder it to his brass basket. Any material whether it's plastic, aluminum, etc will work if the mesh looks to be about the right size. Once you fill the basket with stowage you will barely see the mesh anyway.

I'm including some pics of the actual mesh and a scan of the Trumpeter PE set that comes with the M1A1 and A2 1/16 kits. If you print it actual size it can be used as a template that is pretty close. I say pretty close because the Trumpeter kit actually has a size mistake on their turret basket where it hangs over too much on one side. The PE is then cut to fit the mistake. If you use the PE template you have to make sure you shorten the elongated side. You can see what I'm talking about below.
