Dec.4-5th 1941 Battle of Moscow decided

Post by Saxondog »

The Battle of Moscow (????? ??? ???????, Romanized: Bitva pod Moskvoy, German: Schlacht um Moskau) is the name given by Soviet historians to two periods of strategically significant fighting on a 600 km (370 mi) sector of the Eastern Front during World War II. It took place between October 1941 and January 1942. The Soviet defensive effort frustrated Hitler's attack on Moscow, capital of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the largest Soviet city. Moscow was one of the primary military and political objectives for Axis forces in their invasion of the Soviet Union.

Key to so many issues of the War,political, strategic and Historically. Largest city and capitol. The defeat of the Soviets at Moscow may well of won the war for Germany and it's allies. Some believe the defeat of the Soviet defenders would have caused a desertion in mass of many people to the Axis cause, and of course the effect on the world view and the Japanese position in Manchuria may have enticed the Japanese to open another front, attacking the Soviets on their undefended border, this would have been a disaster for Stalin, and a certainly would have drained resources at a time when the balance of power was as yet a fluid situation.
