Three Sister of war Yamato class ships of Japan

Post by Saxondog »

The ships in question were a class like no other, and a class of three. One never even got in the fight, and died a lonely death. But the other two sisters each absorbed more punishment than any ship before or since before scumming to their wounds.

Built to be the most formidable ships in the world, powerful and fast. Also elegant in appearance the true warriors of the seas, yet wasted in their use and squandered for no other reason than desperation.

One succumbed after hours of attack,17BOMB HITS and 19 Torpedos. This does not take into account the massive number of near misses and the strafing attacks.

The other sister after a much shorter period of time sustained 8 known bomb hits and 11 known torpedo hits, sinking she exploded the mushroom cloud rising 3.7miles high.

These two ships were exclusively destroyed by aircraft ending a era and forever changing the war at sea.The third sister died while being moved ironically for safety and to be completed as the largest aircraft carrier in the world, she would die after 4 torpedos sinking without ever launching a single aircraft into combat.

The three Yamato class ships built ironically by companies still building the worlds largest ships today,Kawasaki Heavy Industries,Mitsubishi, the massive building slips still used today as well, for super tankers of 200,000tonnes.

These were very innovative ships, but their massive size and powerful guns were wasted by the foolish ideas of desperate men.Imagine a gun weighing 100tons,460mm firing a 3200lbs,shell 20 miles and multiply that times 9. Each turret weighing as much as a destroyer, the ships themselves a massive 72,800tonnes full load displacement. Double the tonnage of the Washington treaty battleships built by the US Navy and the Royal Navy. Yet never meeting their counter parts in battle.

Yamato can be seen today lying in 12000 feet of water, the others still lost to the sea. In Japan they revere this ship,a 1/10 scale version at the museum in KURE JAPAN. As in life this is the largest Model ship in the world.

I read somewhere that it cost Mitsubishi more money to build the model than the real one !! My favourite Battleship but I would not like to be on the receiving end of a barrage from it.

That happened only once,Battle of the Leyte Gulf, the recipients were American "JEEP CARRIERS" and "FLETCHER CLASS"DESTROYERS". really ironic that these massive guns never fired on another battleship.
