Nail varnish?

I usually give them a good coat of silver, then a Matt iron tone followed by Matt black wash.

Do you mean tow cables?

I use Valleyo German Grey and then some Natural Steel drybrush.

This is a brilliant video covering the essentials of painting a tank, including accessories like tools and cables.
He uses Tamiya XF-69 Nato Black as the base colour, but then streaks grey and gunmetal in there, to get the right detail and depth.
I use Nato Black as my default base colour for metals now, followed by Tamiya Weathering master "C": Rust, Gunmetal and Silver' to achieve a metallic weathered look.

Oh, I forgot to mention the most obvious detail, Frank, you will need a metal primer (Tamiya, or MR Metal for example) to provide a key for paints to adhere properly. Otherwise, your handiwork will flake off with ease.

I've been specifically priming with black primer now just in case the base coat paint goes on thin in some areas so it's not noticeable. It's not for a "shadow coat" so to speak.

I build a lot of PZ4s and the Tow cables are thinner than the Tiger 1 this means they are only available in copper rather than steel,
I tie a length of cotton thread around the tow loop and immerse the Rope in a Tin of "Hammerite" Silver Paint for at least 2 days which allows the paint to adhere to the whole of the cable,
Using the Cotton thread I hang the Cable to dry for at least 3 days and it looks fine positioned on the back of a PZ4.
