HL dual current gearboxes compatability

Post by mitchell »

I'm looking at upgrading the gearboxes in my Torro Pro edition KT to a Heng Long dual current gearbox. I'm running it with an IBU2U full option, so electronics wise it shouldn't be a problem, just switch it over to "clutch gearboxes" in settings.But....will it fit a Torro/Taigen KT hull? Drive shaft wise it looks OK. anyone got any experience of fitting these into a Torro/Taigen tank?

Thank you kindly :)

I bought a set and dropped them into a taigen panther g hull. Running them off an ibu2u as well. Like them a lot. They fit well and have some serious grunt behind them.

Yes it will fit in a Taigen/Torro KT Hull.
But, it's not the right thing for realistic driving in KT.
Imho the Taigen Premium Gearboxes 7.1 version 3 for King Tiger would be better.

The Heng Long Dual Current Driving System is quite sensitive with the gears on the drive shafts.
These should definitely be mounted with additional ball bearings near the sprockets.
The lasered base plate does not have enough stability to support the drive shafts properly.
Here is an example of how I mounted the base plate in the metal chassis of the T-90:

Thanks guys, appreciate the response. I WAS going to go for the DKLM's, as they've just started another production run, but when you factor in import duties etc....and going by available reviews the HL's are of decent quality. Scale speed? Yeah obviously I'm all for that. Currently I'm running it with black 5:1 ratios with a pair of JP Power 480's, so there's plenty of power. I have power to the motors at 60% and have become quite adept at throttle feathering over the years so the big girls speed looks about right. I think I'm going to go for it, I'm going to get them.

The new ones DKLM RC has are all metal (IE the covers are metal) which I think would be quite heavy. He has it on his site for $245. That's pretty damn steep. For that price I would go for an ETO transmission or stick with the HL CNC separate units I'm using in the SU-152 and my other T-72. These puppies have plenty of power and are like $112 on Aliexpress:

I thought this transmission bolted directly to the HL mounts, but the mounting holes don't line up in the T-72 plastic chassis.

I love the ones I have bought up to now from DKLM, but really dont see why the need to go from plastic housing to metall, and that steep price stepp

Yeah I like those premium Taigen jobs, the one with the covers. I've lost count of the number of clear plastic covers I've made for the GB's. Gary did a thorough set of videos on them a while back.

I'll post pics of my progress when I get it underway, if I can remember how to post pics

Quick update - GB's arrived today. Seem like decent enough quality and the motors are good enough to avoid immediate replacing. I was initially flummoxed as to how to attach it to the hull plate but 2 screws on the top and the plate slides off and you can just secure it then slide the gearbox back on.
Simple switch to clutch gearbox in the IBU2 file and that was it.

Easy peasy, big girl runs like a dream

Yeah they seem to be composed of relatively high grade materials. Despite the plastic they're pretty solid. I haven't striped it down yet, id love to know what's behind that plastic shell.
