poor slow speed steering

The problem seems to be thus...
when moving away from a stand still i always have one motor start before the other so the direction of the tank is a bit random
i can move off in a straight line if i push both sticks to full but this is not good for slow speed.
i am using a standard radio turnigy 9xr pro with both sticks at auto centre.
I know a lot of the good folks on here use the HL controller but i needed more channels.
Has any body set their tank up using standard radio gear and if so what were the pitfalls.
I am somewhat new to this arena of rc modelling and to the modern radios

Assuming both motors are the same and new or clean, you can adjust the EPAs, subtrim and exponential on the two throttle channels on most decent transmitters with 4 or more channels so that both motors start together and maintain the same revs throughout the throttle travel. Check the radio instruction book for details.

He is not using the supplied transmitter. Adjusting the substring will do the same thing. The other adjustments ensure more general speed/steering control.

Just out of interest what Control Board are you using ?
If it is an IBU if you put the SD card in your computer you can adjust the settings,
Off hand I think you can do the same with other MFUs,
Certainly the Elmod in my M16 has an SD card which allows me to make adjustments.

I have not used a control board
The hardware that came with the tank was a pair of mtroniks tank ESC's and a pair of mtroniks 11a esc's with a mtroniks marine 15 esc
The marine 15 is working as turret traverse
the tank esc i would guess to be about 45A and seem to be proportional speed with the tank on bricks but it does throw itself around when on the deck
left stick is self centering and controlles the left track (back = reverse mid = off , forward is stick forward and same with right stick.
Fundamentally it works well but a trifle fierce.
I am waiting on china for some 120a esc to suit the motors fitted but am basing my knowledge of model tanks control on something i had as a kid
this toy is a bit of a lump and i would really like to show it off to others some time with out possibly breaking someones foot

Hi man, I know nothing about sparks, but 120A seems crazy to me.
As far as I know the tamiya units are 10 A.
Elmod is 10A for sure.
I also use some 10A for a king tiger.

SO unless you are driving a 1/4 scale, steel king tiger, 120A is way too much and you wont get nothing from it but bulky electronics...

Regarding your issue, my experience is no tank drives 100% straight whatever you do (unless you install some PSDG gearboxes) Id start trying to trim and tweak with the radio until you correct it.

Can you just put us more in the picture. From the manual, what make / model is this tank and what scale is it and can you please post some photos of the tank and its internals.
