Import Duties

Post by Jake79 »

Hi All

I was wondering if I got my g/f moni who's in Poland at the moment to order me a Tamiya kit from say Banzai hobbies and then send to me in the UK would I avoid import duties..I've done some reading up, I've read they don't pay duties on TV's and electrical good's etc from China but on others purchases it looks like the import rate to Poland is 17%..would this include tanks???

Cheers

You wouldn't have to pay duty, but vat at 20% would be added if you order to the U.K. So worst case you would save 3% on the vat. I'm assuming it would get from Poland to here without inviting extra costs?

Tom I was thinking to give Moni the money, she can order it to her Parents address she then sends to me from her local post office in Poland..and your point is I will only save 3% yes?? if so maybe not worth it.:(

You might still have to pay VAT like you do in the uk on top of any duties, this is where it gets a bit more complex. Worth checking if there's a flat vat rate on all imports. The states benefit from not having VAT and hobby stuff is tax exempt.

As Poland is in the EU don't you avoid any import taxes? On the Poland - UK leg anyway.

Anything imported from outside the EU into the EU 'may' get charged (Import Duty + Postage) x VAT when it is imported.
Japan > UK = (Import Duty + Postage) x VAT @ 20%
Japan > Poland = (Import Duty + Postage) x VAT @ 23%.
If the customs do not spot the parcel you can avoid all charges.

Anything that is traded between EU countries only pays VAT as this is common between all EU countries, this is applied in the country in which it is sold. There is no Import Duty between EU countries.
So UK > Poland = VAT paid to seller. No Import Duty. No VAT charged on postage.

If an item is imported to the UK, the full Import Duty/Postage/VAT may be charged.
If the items is then exported to Poland from the UK it will not attract any further charges as no VAT will be charged by your girlfriend.
The postage costs UK>Poland will be the only additional cost.

So, you may save 3% on the VAT, which is only 3 Euro's per 100 Euro's spent.
800 Euro tank = 184 Euro's VAT @ 23%
800 Euro tank = 160 Euro's VAT @ 20%
Saving is 24 Euro's.
But, postage from UK>Poland may be greater than 24 Euro's?
