Power supply for our village…

On our battle field we need still some buildings; a transformer station fits well, and some power poles will complete this ensemble. How I realize this will be here described.
Role model are some pictures from an old transformer station and historical poles; this should match to barn and timbered house.
First I make again drawings from all parts. A mixed method of construction is the aim; mostly plastered, but also with lintels and cornice from masonry. The footprint will be around 0,15 x 0,15 Metres.

Image

Main building material will be a hard foam plate; so are the costs not too high and it will be a lightweight and good to transport.

Image

I’ve started with the openings for windows and the door.

All single plates were thereafter screwed.

The transformer station will be completed with some power poles; this should match to the barn and the timbered house. A drawing is again necessary; base material for the poles are roundwood from beech with a length of 1000mm.

Image

These were cut all 330 mm. So I receive 3 parts each roundwood without waste; each pole comply with a length of 5 metres in original.

Image

From top were 1 cm marked…

Image

…and each pole receive there a circulating notch.

Image

The reason for that is how I‘ll mount the cross traverse with the insulators at the poles. From a 3 mm threaded rod from brass…

Image

…arises little bracket screws. The threaded rod was heated and bent. Here a first picture from my bracket screw at the pole.

Image

The traverses were made from brass U-profile 5 x 3 mm.

Image

This profile was also cut…

Image

…and the single parts for the bracket screws centre marked and drilled.

Image

For today that’s all from my poles, continued soon…

First I’ve finished one pole because I haven’t had a plan for my insulators.

Image

At the beginning I’ve used as holder for the insulators still 1 mm riveting head screws, later I‘ve changed to 1 mm brass rod, which will be easy sold to the traverse. To receive appealing insulators, I’ve built some test insulators. Used were easy round material which later was a bit shaped.

Image

In the following picture on the left side shown variant is my favourite…

Image

Thereafter I’ve bought me 5 mm round material from polystyrene…
It goes on with the transformation house; from a 5 mm thick hard foam plate were Masonry parts for lintel and cornice build.

Image

Image

Also at the roof was worked. Similar as at my barn should arise a wooden roof with a roof cardboard. For the substructure I’ve used again 10 x 10 mm square bars.

Image

The square bars were after sawing glued and receive a cover from thin wooden plates, also leftovers from my barn.

Image

The roof should be removeable and that’s why I’ve built for locking an inner construction.

Image

Thereafter receive the house the first both lintels; furthermore receive my house a bottom plate with a step tread.

Image

Also a doorframe were prefabricated.

Continued soon…

I have never seen so much attention and detail on a power supply pole before!

After my test phase I’ve bought round material for the insulators…

Image

…and then could the serial production start.

Image

Image

Image

Here the new insulators at a pole; a closer view…

Image

…and a view from a greater distance.

Image

To set up the poles on our battle field, they still need a corresponding mandrel. The starting material for the mandrels were simple nails.

Image

In every pole foot was a hole drilled and the pins after decapitation glued into the hole.

Image

Now is assiduity work announced; for all poles must be made insulators, all traverses have to be primed and lacquered. Also the poles should receive their finally colour;…

Image

…here a first test with root tar. At the next attempt I want to thin the tar and stretched with a bit varnish.

Image

Until next time…

Also doubling as espionage weapons !!
Nice work Mr Hotte.............clever way to disguise James Bond assassination tools as humble but magnificent 1/6th power poles !!!

Wonderfull job. I was planning to build the same (if someday I have hobby time again, lol) but my idea was to fit a battery inside, and to give power to those poles. Are you going to do the same?
